Ok - I've now spent 15-20 minute trying to figure out how to turn on Google Now, and can't figure it out (or have some problem). I'm not a total newbie, so I'm a little frustrated - sorry in advance for dumb question (!!).

Me:

Verizon Galaxy Nexus
AOKP JB Build 1
Nothing particularly out of the ordinary

thx in advance.

Are you guys swiping up from the home button? You need to do that to get to the initial setup.

Im using that same exact gapps package with AOKP Build 1. I have Google Now. Hold down the the home button then you will see the "Google" in the top if the circle. Or you can get to it from the lockscreen.
Check if "velvet.apk" is in your system/app

Go into your drawer & open the Google app. That should bring it up. If it only brings up a search box, there should be a menu button (action button, three dots) on the bottom right, with the option to turn on Google Now. If none of that works, then your GApps is probably bad. Either redownload & check the md5 or get a different GApps package. I've been using Goo.im's gapps, which is what CM10 recommends.
