SOLVED, got the answer on StackExchange.

I tried the method listed in rootzwiki, but after running Revolutionary I got this message:

Your device: doubleshot, with HBOOT 1.45.0013 is not supported at this time

Then I unlocked the bootloader with the official tool from HTC, which worked fine.

I understand I now need to load a rooted rom.

I tried following the instructions on to install CyanogenMod, and I got pages of:

An error occurred while running the exploit (-1) (errno: 25)

when I attempted to run the fre3vo tool.

Elsewhere I read that the result of $ cat /dev/msm_rotator meant that I was not vunrable to this exploit.

/dev/msm_rotator: invalid length

I want to get root. Advice on what I should try next?

this is the myTouch 4G Slide not myTouch 4G. Your lucky it stopped because you would've bricked. After unlocking from HTC, you can go ahead and install a rom. If you still want S-Off for some reason go here

I don't think I need s-off(?) I understand that s-off is for custom radios, and such. (It looks like I need root before I run that s-off app in any case.)

Can I install a custom rom without root? Every method I have tried so far looked like it was trying to get some sort of 'temp root', which hasn't worked yet.

1) Unlock through HTCDev.
2) Flash an insecure boot image for your build.
3) Gain s-off via Juopunutbear.
4) Flash ROMS without the need to fastboot a boot image.

Looking for the answer to your computer woes? Download Ubuntu. It's free, it's Linux, and it only looks like Windows.
