went into ROM Manager and flashed the ROM and GAPPS zips files..when do I have to flash the kernel and recovery??
Flash the kernel as you would do with gapps, and flash the recovery in fastboot.

Kernel and latest cwm recovery. They aren't necessary but the kernel will give you epic battery and multitouch issues... and recovery gives you a ics status bar.

Are you saying that the kernel will give you epic battery and multitouch problems, or solutions?

edit: Decided to just back up my phone and try it, I still found the same multitouch issues after flashing the kernel, and I could not turn on WiFi after the new kernel either. Did I do something wrong? I used the 'install zip from sdcard' method, first on the ROM, second gapps, third on the kernel. Is the order important?

I'm still running 4-16 and just now started having trouble with the camera not starting. its worked fine up until now. and i've made no major changes that i can think of
going to flash 4-20 as soon as the DL finishes.

the wierd thing is that the facebook camera that they added with the update, loads just fine...

I know the stock kernel has multitouch problems, but my battery has been only slightly worse than when using the stock CM7 kernel. I think both kernels have the multitouch problems.

I can't wait for a damn leak to come out so I can play my games on ICS!! I just wouldn't be able to make it though the day at work if I couldn't take a ten minute temple run break lol.

Still, I love throwing this on my phone and playing with it for a little bit. It's going to be a good day when this is completed. Love the work!
I love what the developers do!!!
