Android 4.3 camera outed in YouTube video - a screenshot tour

Earlier Friday morning, a Nexus 4 on a trade show floor was pictured running Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, sparking a new round of "ooh - Android 4.3 in the wild" and "something looks fishy but the photos still look promising" speculations, but another development in the afternoon weighed in heavily in favor of the picture being real. A video was posted on Facebook (then copied to Google+, then to YouTube...) showing the Android 4.3 camera in action. Once again, I'm here to take you on a screenshot tour of the improvements Google made to the general UI. In Android 4.2, when you tap on the settings button on the lower right or long-press in the preview itself, you get a circular array of settings controls. The only problem with the circular layout is that your finger blocks you from seeing some of the controls. In Android 4.3 it appears that the controls have been rearranged to fit in an arc above the finger (why didn't they do this the first time around?). Without...

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean test firmware leaked for the international Galaxy S3

In a previous article we posted a rumor that originated on a Facebook page dedicated to Galaxy Note 2 enthusiasts claiming that the Galaxy S3 and the Note 2 would receive Android 4.2 Jelly Bean by the end of May. Coincidentally (or not), it turns out that a leaked test build of Android 4.2.2-based TouchWiz is available today on Samsung enthusiast site SamMobile .The rumor we posted before might not completely pan out, if SamMobile's claim of a June launch of the update for the Galaxy S3 turns out to be true. The site also said the leak is not feature-complete since it is a test build and development work is continuing for this update. Nevertheless, the actual firmware leak is available for download on SamMobile, so I suggest you download it while you can, before Samsung's lawyers issue takedown notices. The leak is for the international version only, but I'm sure developers for the U.S. variants will find a way to port at least some of the features over (unless, of cours...

Sense 5.1 with Android 4.2.2 system dump leaked for the HTC Butterfly: Ports Inbound?

HTC has a fairly poor track record for timely Android updates and leaving a few of their handsets stranded has done nothing for its rapport with the community. Lately, though it seems that HTC is renewing its promise to keep its devices up to date and in a timely fashion. For example, there is already an update to the One in the queue right now that will give Stateside HTC One owners improved camera, audio, battery life, and performance. Perhaps another early sign of this renewed committment is a system dump that was recently leaked: Sense 5.1 and Android 4.2.2 for the HTC Butterfly (the international counterpart to the Droid DNA).Though this dump has actually been available for some time, XDA developer Zarboz is making it available in an XDA thread. This is with the hope of being ported to the (Sprint) HTC One. Some of the more interesting things in the leak can be seen in the images below. (notice the quick toggles :D) It is my hope that developers will be able to at least pull...

Mystery Motorola phone leaked with stock Android (?), sans X-factor

A new leak has sprung on Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn , revealing a new mystery phone from Motorola which indicates that Google has truly begun influencing the design and software on the formerly Blur-happy company's handsets. This is apparently not the highly-anticipated but unconfirmed X phone, but is a mid-range beast with a 4-inch, 720p AMOLED display and a quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. The real story is not in the specs, but in what looks like a stock version of Android running on the device - the strongest indicator yet that Google is beginning to assert its influence over the design of Motorola handsets. From what I could see of the hands-on video, the only significant remainder of Motorola's past skins is the clock widget on the homescreen. You'll no doubt be interested to notice the screenshots I captured of the app drawer, in which almost no bloatware is to be found, save for a few testing apps and a rather intriguing "targeted notification app"....

Motorola Atrix Gets ICS Leak

Yesterday morning, a build for ICS on the Motorola Atrix 4G was leaked on XDA. This comes as exciting news because last month, Motorola changed their status on the update for the Atrix from "Q3 2012" to "Will remain on Gingerbread (Android 2.3)." This saddened and enraged many owners of the device, and rightfully so. The device wasn't even a year old when Ice Cream Sandwich launched. Now, Atrix owners can flash this leak and get a taste of what is hopefully coming. Before you do this, please make sure you know what you are doing. This could end up bricking your device. Believe me, I've bricked an Atrix before. To get the update on your device, you will have to have the bootloader unlocked, which can be explained here . Once you have your bootloader unlocked, follow these steps:Grab the .zip from here . (EDIT: So the .zip has been pulled from here. Use this instead.)Make sure you have the Motorola drivers and the Moto-Fastboot.exe . Make sure the leak .zip is...

Galaxy Nexus Will Be the First Android Phone Running Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)

According to a recent posting on DroidLife.com, the Google Play Store jumped the gun on announcing Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). The reference was quickly removed by Google, but not before the writer was able to get a screen shot. It has been anticipated that Jelly Bean would be Android 4.1 instead of Android 5.0. The screen shot shows the Google Play Store referencing the GSM Galaxy Nexus as the First phone to receive Android 4.1. It has been rumored that Google was looking to announce Jelly Bean at Google IO, which begins next week. Should an announcement occur, Android enthusiasts will get their first official look at the new features included in Android 4.1. An additional screen shot shows a reworked search bar, similar to the search bar included in the Google IO app. While a leaked reference to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) is exciting, device manufacturers and carriers need to move quicker with updating existing devices to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). What are your thoughts on...

Verizon Screen Shot Leak Shows HTC Thunderbolt Scheduled to Receive Update on May 10th

According to leaked screen shots published on Droid Life, HTC Thunderbolt Owners are slated to get a software update on May 10th. Unfortunately for Thunderbolt owners, this update was not listed with the leaked screen shots which show the Android devices which are receiving an Android 4.0 – Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) update. This probably means that this update is a final version of the Gingerbread maintenance update, which was leaked last week on Android Police. The leak is Build 2.11.605.19 (Gingerbread) and came complete with updated 3G and 4G LTE radios. The leaked 2.11.605.19 update is an HTC Sense 2.1 build. The leak and custom ROMs which have been developed from it can be found on RootzWiki’s HTC Thunderbolt Development Forum. Even though HTC has announced that it will upgrade the Thunderbolt to ICS, there has been no word on when that upgrade will happen and given that the Thunderbolt is an older phone - updating the Thunderbolt is probably not a high priority for HTC.ROM deve...

What Phones Will Be Released?According to Boy Genius Report, the following phones are slated for Summer/Fall release (my comments in parentheses):The Samsung Galaxy S3 (that’s right - Verizon will not pass up the Samsung flagship this year as they did in favor of the Galaxy Nexus in 2011)The rumored Droid RAZR HD - aka the Droid Fighter, one of “‘multiple’ Motorola RAZR phones due to hit Verizon in the coming months” (Again? Really? Why flood the market with multiple Droids again? Do you actually encourage buyer’s remorse, Verizon?)An HTC flagship device slated for a Fall release (this one might be worth the wait for you HTC fans)According to other sources, these will be joined by the following phones:The Samsung Galaxy Journal (Verizon’s equivalent to the Galaxy Note)The Droid Incredible 4G (Droid Incredible stalwarts can finally enjoy 4G LTE - HTC fans overall might want to wait for the HTC flagship phone mentioned by BGR)Worth the Wait? Those of you currently eligible for an upgra...

Samsung Unpacked App Suggests Galaxy S3 Name, Tipster Suggests Possible Ceramic Back, Preorders Abound in Germany

Galaxy S3 Name Unpacked? Keywords in the Play Store’s description for the Samsung Unpacked 2012 app suggest that “the next Galaxy” will be named the “Galaxy S3” (note the Arabic numeral instead of the Roman numeral - a departure from Samsung’s naming scheme for the 2nd generation of Galaxy S devices). Ceramic Back?A tipster named eldarmurtazin sent an instagram of what might be the back of the new device, possibly indicating a ceramic backing. If you’ll observe the light reflection on the bottom right, it is not the smooth, clear reflection one would expect from a glossy plastic surface, as on most previous Galaxy S devices. In fact, it looks more like the slightly dulled reflection one might expect from a ceramic surface. Obviously, an Instagram is hardly acceptable evidence, and this picture could have been taken from one of many different objects. I am not putting too much weight on this leak either, but it does coincide with previous rumors of a ceramic backing. Personally, I w...

Accessories Reveal the Shape of the Next Galaxy? A company called Kolay has released a pair of accessories for sale on Amazon’s UK website here , here , and here which contain previously-leaked renders of the phone to be revealed next week. There’s certainly no guarantee that these renders are accurate, yet this company invested the money and other resources to produce these accessories - a risky move if the company has no knowledge of what shape the next Galaxy will take. That’s not to say they wouldn’t take such a risk if they’re in a position to make quick design changes and eat the costs of producing their present products (especially since they got a lot of free publicity from various tech blogs). The Galaxy S III Beats the Competition in Graphics Benchmark? A member of the GLBenchmark graphics benchmark site community recently uploaded a test in which the rumored Galaxy S III chipset (now believed to be a quad-core Exynos 4 series processor clocked at 1.4 Ghz with a Mali-400...

The Galaxy SII...S?Andrew Hoyle at Cnet’s Crave UK blog has indications from a “source in the UK telecoms industry” that the successor to the Galaxy SII will only be a minor update, “like the iPhone 4s was to the 4.” Though the source wished to remain anonymous, the news has spread throughout the blogosphere, no doubt due to Cnet’s reputation as a leading source of tech news. The source also believes that the phone will not be called the Galaxy SIII. Interestingly, Natasha Lomas, also from Cnet, quoted a Samsung vice president as saying that the Galaxy Note is considered the successor to the Galaxy SII. It is unclear what name Samsung would choose for its new device, which allegedly goes by the internal name “Bali.”What Other Features Are Planned?Cnet’s anonymous source believes that eye-tracking will be included with the new handset, a feature by which the front-facing camera tracks eye movement and can automatically lock the screen when your eyes move away from the display.
HTC One X Photo Revealed

We've heard about four "One" phones so far, the One X (Endeavor), One S (Ville), One V, and the One XL. We've seen concepts of a few of these phones but more recently Pocketnow has managed to snag a leak of the first press photo for the HTC One X. http://rootzwiki.com/uploads/monthly_02_2012/ccs-24163-0-42194300-1330015249.jpgYou knew it was coming, and this latest snap shot points to a green light for this little number to appear at the upcoming Mobile World Congress. This leaked image is a bit different from the initial Endeavor photos floating around, but the overall form factor pretty much remains. The biggest differences here are the changing from the old four button style to a new three capacitive button setup reflecting Ice Cream Sandwich.
Google Trackpad Points Towards Android Laptop

More and more information about the desktop/laptop capabilities of Android Jellybean are surfacing by the minute! We told you about some of the big plans for a desktop feature that is reported to make an appearance in Jellybean and the latest Google patent seems to further support that information. El Goog's most recently discovered patent is for what can easily be considered one of the key features of any good laptop device, the multi-touch trackpad.Google filing a patent for a trackpad doesn't necessarily mean it's for Android related devices. There could be any number of reasons for big G to want to pursue ownership of such an accessory but with the recent developments it's hard to ignore the coincidence. This could merely be Google's way to corner the market for any android laptop accessories that want to include a trackpad (we're looking at you Transformer and Transformer Prime) however, we wouldn't be surprised one bit to see trackpad capabilit...

ZTE to Unveil Two New Android Phones at MWC

Stateside, ZTE may not be one of the most known Android developers. None of the big four have a single ZTE device, so unless you're on prepaid, you might not even know they exist. Nonetheless, this developer from China is unveiling a higher end and a midrange device at MWC. The big question is whether or not we'll see these phones in the US. The N910 is a midranged device, sporting 4.3 inch HDPI screen, a dual core 1.2 GHz processor, and a 5 megapixel camera. Nothing too fancy, but it was the fact that this is a CDMA & LTE capable device that caught our eye. Since a good amount of prepaid carriers are CDMA, and since MetroPCS now has an LTE service; there's a pretty good chance we'll see this guy in the US. The PF200, on the other hand, is a higher end device; boasting a 4.3 inch QHD screen, a dual core 1.5 GHz processor, and an 8 megapixel camera. Unlike the N910, this is a GSM device with support for LTE and NFC. Since T-Mobile has expressed no interest in an L...

Another day, another leak. This time an official RUU from HTC shows the Endeavor in all its glory. Where did it come from? Who leaked it? Will robots be the cause of a dystopian future void of human life? We don't know, and frankly we don't care, either. But what we do care about are the specs of this glorious looking handheld form HTC. It's time for the future phones. Even though dual cores aren't that old, it looks like we're getting ready to throw them out for the quad core monsters of the future. Enter the HTC Endeavor: quad core Tegra 3, 720p 4.7" screen, NFC, and Ice Cream Sammich w/ Sense 4.0. Honestly, that thing sounds amazing. The phone doesn't "officially" exist yet, but there's a safe bet that HTC will unveil it at the MWC coming up. But there are a few things that caught our eye. The first is something that every HTC owner has pined for. It looks like Sense 4.0 is going to have a wonderful looking landscape mode. In the past, if y...
