Some days you just want to sit back, relax, unwind and have a nice stress-free couple of minutes: just you and your phone. Well, okay, maybe that’s not really the case. Let’s say that sometimes you just want to play a fun little game that requires somewhere between zero thought and absolutely no thought at all. If that’s the case, then you might want to give Liquid Entertainment’s Paper Galaxy a look. A mashup of an endless running game and platform jumping game, it’s up to you to get the playful little blue moon back to mother Earth - and out of the jaws of the evil crab nebula. Perhaps you're wondering "how in the world does a moon get lost from Earth?" Simple, it chases after a pretty little butterfly. Sure, these games very rarely make any kind of sense, but let’s be honest here, we don’t play these games because they make sense. Our little blue moon - aptly named Luna - has wandered out into the vastness of space chasing after silly little butterflies, and sudd...

Chip Chain: Match Three, Vegas Style (GGE)

I admit it, I have a bit of a problem when it comes to “match three” games - I just can't seem to avoid at least giving them a chance. There are a fortunate few that are able to bring just enough of a difference to the table to actually make them interesting. They come in role-playing types , building types and even old-school types , each uniquely entertaining in its own way. I also have to admit that when I first saw Chip Chain show up in the Play Store I was not all that convinced that it would be my cup of tea but decided that I would go ahead and give it a go. From the developers at AppAbove Games , Chip Chain brings with it a touch of strategy to the fold that is the match-three genre. Centered around the idea of being seated at a casino game, Chip Chain presents you with a playing board that you and the dealer will slowly fill with numbered chips (to go along with a few ‘X’ chips thrown in for good measure). The idea is absurdly simple - match groups of like-numbered...

The new Google Drive - a screenshot tour

Google Drive got a major overhaul on Wednesday, adding some features borrowed from Google+ as well as the ability to scan documents as PDF files and download copies of your files onto your device. I kicked the tires on the updated app on the Droid DNA, the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 7, and I'm only too happy to share the results (and accompanying screenshots) with you. In testing, I focused on three of the most compelling new features: the UI facelift, document scanning, and searching for text in photos and PDFs.UI improvements in the cards The new card interface looks great and mimics the functionality of Google+. When you open Drive, you can view your files in grid view, which displays each file as a small card with a preview of its contents in your folder. When you tap the "i" button on the bottom right of each "card," an info card appears with a preview and basic file information (it fills the whole window on phones and appears as a sidebar on tablets).

Thor, he of the witty one-liners, the wielder of Mjolnir, the bane of Ragnarok, is subject of today’s not quite tower defense but heavily action-oriented game Thor: Lord Of Storms . The developers over at Animoca have recently added the Norse-themed action game to its stable of heavily, decidedly less manly , games such as “Star Girl” and series of “Pretty Pet” games. I don’t know about you, but I would much rather be playing a kick-butt Thor game as opposed to, say, Pretty Pet Salon. But that’s just me. Ah, it would appear as though the time of Ragnarok is nigh. Or at least the forces of evil have begun to force their way through portals within the Nine Worlds of Yggdrasil, spreading their recipe of death and destruction. It is up to you to fight them back to the depths of evil from which they came. In Thor: Lord of Storms, the developers from Animoca have crafted another in a line of what I like to call “Tower Offense” games. The idea is a familiar one: you take control of a h...

The Nexus 4's Wireless Charger took a while to get here and when it did, it brought along a hefty price tag. Reminiscent of Palm's Touchstone wireless charger, former Palm VP of user experience Matias Duarte ( now Android's director of user interface), brings his idea to Google. The Nexus 4 Wireless Charger (often referred to as the “charging orb”) was an accessory highly anticipated by Nexus 4 owners, and was shown in a video that The Verge had made when they visited Google HQ. If you'll recall, the video introduced us to the Nexus 4, Nexus 10, the Nexus 10’s cover (that was just released) Android 4.2, and the Nexus 4 Wireless Charger. If you’re familiar with Nexus accessories, then it might not come as a surprise to you that the “orb” was released months after the Nexus 4. Google seems to release its devices cases and covers (minus the Nexus 10’s) out as soon as the device itself launches, but its docks tend to be released a few months later (the Nexus 7’s dock also...

Nimble Quest: New Age Snake

I can’t say that I fondly remember all the hours that I spent on my classic Nokia brick/candy bar phone playing Snake, but I can say that there really was not much else to do on that thing when I was bored. Unless I wanted to actually, you know, call somebody - but who does that?! I can say, though, that I spent an inordinate amount of time playing Snake on my ascii linux terminal, if for no other reason than it was a great way to learn the basic directional keys for vim, but that’s best left for another tale. Why am I talking about Snake at all? As it turns out, Nimble Quest , from the developers over at NimbleBit , has taken the snake mechanic and applied it to an adventure game. How does it fare? Not too bad, actually. Let me just start off with the basics, those being the game controls. There is no on-screen joystick, the developers instead opting for the much easier “swipe to go that direction” control scheme. It’s easy to use, it’s quick, it’s darn near thoughtless and...

Pixel Dungeon: Roguelike Explorer

Roguelike . The mere mention of the game genre instills with it an idea of expectations, many of which are - for this writer at least - set fairly high. There are quite a few games out there that purport to be “roguelike,” bearing at least a passing resemblance to the classic game of yore that is the namesake of the style. If you have ever taken the time to play some of the classics (I’m not referring to Diablo here), such as Nethack or Angband (or any number of forks of either), then you know what I’m talking about when the term “roguelike” is bandied about. In an almost obsessive behavior, I grab onto and try out any game to hit my Android phone that lays claim to the term. The latest of those is Pixel Dungeon , from watabou , and not only is it roguelike, but as can be inferred from the title, it also is the latest in the wave to latch onto the 8-bit pixelation fad. There is very little, none actually, in the way of storyline for Pixel Dungeon and that really isn't such a...

Seidio Convert Case for the Nexus 4

Seidio is a well-known name in the mobile phone market, supplying support for an array of mobile devices. The company offers cases ranging from the mild to the wild. In this review, I’ll be looking at its “Convert” case, which practically turned my Nexus 4 into the Tumbler from The Dark Knight franchise. My experience with Seidio products ranges years back, well into my Blackberry days. At the time, Seido had different names for its cases; the now-named “Surface” was called the “Innocase” and its Convert case was formally known as the “Innocase Rugged”. The names might have changed, but the quality hasn't.The Convert is a mashup of the Surface and Active cases. In other words, if they had a baby, the Convert would be their big, bulky baby. The case itself consists of the Surface case, wrapped around by a soft-touch silicone that’s meant to absorb drops, then all held together by a skeleton(think of the outer part of the Active case here). With the combo, you also have a rather he...

Hazard Rush: Mob Mentality (Update: pulled from Play Store)

As is true in many other aspects of life, there are times when you find something extraordinary without even looking for it. Such is the case with Hazard Rush, the first title out of the box from developer Surreal Street . Hazard Rush looks like it could be comfortably nestled within the hallowed halls of the arcades of old, but don’t let the vector graphics fool you - there have been plenty of modern classics that utilize the same design successfully. For a freshman effort, one really has to appreciate the gameplay that Hazard Rush brings to the table. Hazard comes initially with one game mode for free, with two more (plus a theater mode) unlockable through an in-app purchase. The freebie game mode, appropriately titled Rush, is most likely what you will spend most of your time in, though, and with nary a nag or advertisement in sight you don’t need to feel pressured to make that purchase. That said, if you spend a decent amount of time in the game you will find yourself making...

Solar 2: Grow Your Own System

Those that follow my writings know that I happen to be a huge fan of the Humble Bundle and that it can be an excellent way to pick up a handful of good titles and expand your gaming library. Today’s game - Solar 2 - is a great example of that, as it was recently featured in one of the Android Humble Bundles. Brought to us by the developers over at Murudai , it promises to be one of the more unique titles on your device. If you have ever played the game Flow, where you grow your tiny aquatic creature into a much larger creature, then you will be instantly familiar with the gameplay ideas that are set forth in Solar 2. Originally released on Steam for the much larger screen (more on that in a bit), the premise is that you more or less command your own little sector of space and grow planets, stars and black holes from asteroids. Starting out as a lonely asteroid, you have to gain mass by colliding with other asteroids until you form a pre-evolutionary planet. Then it’s all abou...

ROM Toolbox Pro gets a Holo-style update

There's only one word I can think of when explaining this app, and that's robust. Robust in the good sense that this app is feature-packed, combining a plethora of root apps in one. If you're new to the rooting scene, then this app is something that you might be interested in. For one price, you get one app that does the job of many. The app has always been functional on many levels, but the latest update gives it a much-needed UI upgrade to Android's Holo guidelines.I've been using this app for the last few days, testing out the features to see what works and what doesn't and so far everything has worked as as it's supposed to. So, what exactly does this app do? The developer lists the vast array of functions below:As you can see from the feature list, the app is somewhat of a "swiss army knife." All those features did work properly in my testing, but for the sake of this article's length I can't go in-depth into all of them in one writin...

Voxel Invaders: Space Invaders For A New Age

If you happen to be anywhere within my age bracket, then you most likely remember playing Space Invaders at your nearest arcade (or convenience store, or pizza joint, or...) and might have even spent a good number of both quarters and time doing so. Even if you don’t have that fond experience from your childhood, it is highly plausible that you have played a round of Space Invaders or two. You might be wondering why such an old game as Space Invaders is being brought up in this day and age, and it’s a valid question. The answer would be because the developers over at Noctua Software have given us an interesting title inspired by that old-school game, Voxel Invaders . It is easy to see where the comparisons can be drawn from Space Invaders when you look at Voxel Invaders, however Voxel Invaders takes those ideas and runs away with them, very far away, and that’s a good thing. Similar to Space Invaders, the premise is extremely simple in its protégé title - clear out each level...

Ah yes, the good old tower defense genre, one of my favorite types of games to engage with on my mobile devices. Sure it can be tough trying to find a tower defense game that brings something new or different to the table, so it is that I very often find myself going back to one of the very first purchases that I made from the Android marketplace (which happened to be Robo Defense, for those of you keeping score). As I am always on the lookout for new and exciting forms of entertainment of the tower-defense persuasion, I noticed one that sounded not entirely intriguing due to its (not so) exceedingly original title - Defender 3 . Uninspired though the title was, the app icon captured my attention, so I took a closer look. Would this title from the developers over at Webelinx be worth my time? More importantly, is it worth your time? To get on with the TL;DR version of this review, I shall just go ahead and say that it was worth my time, and I think it'll be worth your time a...

Key Ring Rewards Card App

Have you ever signed up for a loyalty program at one of your favorite stores? You know, those credit card-shaped cards, which also come with smaller versions made specifically for your key ring? It seems the more of them you have, the harder it is to store your actual keys in your pocket. I have four myself, and even though it doesn't take much energy to use the ones on your key ring, it really just comes down to convenience.A new app called Key Ring Rewards Card aims to let you store all your gift and loyalty cards in one place.
If you’re like me, then I know exactly where you’re at on Sunday afternoons; watching The Walking Dead. AMC’s The Walking Dead has picked up a following that has everyone talking about it at the watercoolers. Some of that talk might be the dislike for Carl, or how Rick should've shot the Governor when they met up. Whatever the talk is about, one main part of the story is that the world is filled with Walkers. For those who don’t follow the series, Walkers are zombies, or biters (depending on which group you roll with). The world is full of them, with only a few living people still roaming around, trying to survive. The Dead Yourself app turns you (or your pets) into Walkers with the help of a little movie magic. When you first open the app, you’re greeted with the apps home screen. From here, you’re able to jump into your Dead Yourself gallery, which houses your past walker creations, the Public Walker Gallery, and your friends pictures.
Otterbox Defender Case for Nexus 7

We are going through different lengths to protect our devices, depending on a variety of factors, such as where we use them, how old they are, and how durable they are out of the box. Some use screen protectors, simple cases, elaborate cases, sleeves, and/or depend on insurance and/or warranty replacements. I tend to dabble between many of these options, and for your benefit I have recently tested a truly elaborate case: the Otterbox Defender case for the Nexus 7. Otterbox's Defender series is the epitome of maximum protection and has been for as long as I can remember. It provides several layers of protection and covers the entire device. The Defender series is an option worth considering for tough professions such as construction, oil ridges, public service, parenting, and traveling. I find tablets tricky to protect. They have larger surface areas susceptible to damage from falls, dings, and scratches. I have accessories that protect just the back, protect the screen, and no...

Ballistic Shell and Gel Case for Nexus 4

What feature mattersmost to you when purchasing a case for your device? Is it colors, protection, design, brand, or something else? Personally, I see cases in three categories: light, medium, and maximum protection because I believe protection is the most important “feature” when looking at cases. When it comes to maximum protection cases, you usually have to sacrifice on design and cosmetics. Has Ballistic struck an effective balance between protection and design? The Ballistic Shell Gel (SG) case technically has three layers of protection: a silicone layer, hard plastic layer and a polymer layer. The hard plastic and polymer layers are fused together, creating one entire hard-shell layer that encloses the inner silicone layer. The silicon layer by design has noticeably thick corners branded as “Ballistic Corners” to protect from falls. Apparently I am not the only that thinks that corners seem to be the most prone to drop. There has to be a better way to protect the corners besi...

I respect Seidio for taking a chance on Android devices. With so many to support, it has to be tough to make cases for each device that comes out. Clearly it is not as easy as supporting Apple's devices, especially given the volume in which the Cupertino company sells its devices. In addition, it is easy when there is only one device design for the entire mobile market. When it comes to the safe bet, Seidio has always been my go-to case manufacturer when I need to take care of my devices. With the Nexus 4, it's no different - Seidio demonstrates its commitment to the Nexus 4 by providing its Active, Surface, and Convert case lineup. Today I review for you the Active & Surface cases for the Nexus 4.I have enjoyed both these case styles on many devices for years now and they never let me down. For many these two cases are enough, since the provide everything you need in two completely different experiences.
Poetic Slimline Case for Nexus 7

Recently, Poetic has released some great accessories for Nexus devices. There have been some issues with some of its cases but the company has done a great job with providing customer service and resolving most issues. I have used Poetic accessories on the Nexus 4, Nexus 10, and the Nexus 7. I submit for your reviewing pleasure another of their cases for the Nexus 7 but this time the case is very professional. The Poetic Revolution for the Nexus 7 was heavy-duty, durable, and very thick while the Slimline is thin, with a rather professional-looking design. Poetic initially released the Slimline only in black and it came with many reported issues of peeling, magnets either being too strong or too weak, and design flaws. I will give credit to Poetic for being committed to making a great product and understanding customers’ clearly reasonable demands. After many revisions of the Slimline, Poetic has released the final version, which will be the one you will see on its site and can pur...

A Weekend with T-Mobile

This weekend was my first time on T-Mobile’s network in over 10 years. I originally started my mobile life with them, but at the time, they were known as VoiceStream. I left their service about a year after they became T-Mobile. Soon after, I became a Verizon subscriber and haven’t looked back. Until now, that is..There are a few reasons why I’m considering T-Mobile as my mobile service provider rather than Verizon Wireless. Most of those reasons you’ve probably already guessed; there's just no place at Verizon for the mobile enthusiast. In the last few months, there’s been talks within the forums about switching carriers, with most of us heading towards Carly, errm, I mean T-Mobile. They seem to be one of the few carriers that offer truly unlimited “4G” service all while being off-contract. In a lot of people’s eyes, that is a really attractive offer, especially with the number one provider, Verizon, doing away with unlimited data.To Verizon’s credit, they do offer different d...
