Those of you waiting for your AT&T HTC One to arrive we have great news for you. The bootloader in your HTC One can be unlocked. If you are aware of rooting, custom recoveries, and custom ROMs having an unlocked bootloader is very important. The best part is that the unlock comes from HTC’s Dev website making the unlock legit. Users over at XDA have already reported on gaining root access and successfully flashing a custom recovery (ClockworkMod) on to the AT&T HTC One.This is great news for you developers that are looking to tinker with a HTC One but rather than shelling out $650 for a developer version , you can (for now) go with the AT&T model. Keep in mind, though, that the bootloader unlock will not be available for long. HTC has already stated that AT&T will not allow bootloader unlock for its variant of the HTC One, so you just know that window of opportunity will be short-lived. In a similar vein, Verizon's Droid DNA bootloaders could be unlocked v...

No matter what evil locks they put on Motorola devices, it seems that someone will always find some way around it. Once again, this has been proven true by DroidRZR.com developer djrbliss . Djrbliss has successfully rooted the Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX running Android 4.1, which has been on these devices since Christmas.Right now, the exploit only works on Windows, but from what I can tell, it seems pretty simple for the user to gain root access. You will want to download (from here ) the provided .zip to your desktop, extract it, and follow the included instructions. Make sure that you have the correct Motorola drivers installed on your computer and USB debugging turned on in your phone's settings. Then, plug your phone in and root away!As always, follow directions. We may be stating the obvious here, but it can't be said enough. Failure to follow directions exactly could result in everything from hours of frantic attempts to unbrick your phone up to and includin...

A Handful of New Motorola Devices Get Root

As I've said time and time again, one of my favorite things about Android is root access. With root you can do all kinds of great things that weren't possible without root. Really, nothing warms my heart like seeing a bunch of phones get root access, and my heart warmed this morning when I read that a whole slew of Motorola phones got root access from Djrbliss .This makes me happy for a couple reasons. Firstly, I've been waiting since the middle of summer for a use for this picture that I took in a school I was working at. Second, I got my start on Android with Motorola phones. The original Droid was my first Android phone and the Droid X followed it. Had it not been for the locked bootloader, perhaps I would still have a Motorola phone.Enough about me. I'm sure you just want to know how to root your phones. So far, it is said that this exploit works for the Droid Razr HD, the Droid Razr M, the Razr I, the Atrix HD, and the Photon Q. This will probably also work on t...

Do you know what is awesome about Android? Rooting. Do you know what's even more awesome than rooting? Having the device you are currently drooling over already rooted before it is even released. It seems like this is the case with the AT&T version of the Galaxy Note 2.The source who brought us the first confirmation for the AT&T Galaxy Note 2 is now telling us that the device has already been rooted. As seen in the screenshot above, the Galaxy Note 2 for AT&T is easily rootable. It does not have a locked down bootloader, unlike the Verizon version. The device is slated for a mid-November release on AT&T. According to the swell guys over at Brief Mobile, the same source who confirmed the Galaxy Note 2 on AT&T has also confirmed that it has been rooted. This is great news for those who will be purchasing the Galaxy Note 2 in November because they will be able to put their favorite ROM onto this giant 5.5" screen, given that it is ported over of course.Can...

The Brave New World of Root Checkers

I try not to take for granted the luxury I have chosen by owning Nexus devices over the past few years. I can unlock my boot loader and root my phone with very little resistance from the carrier or the OEM. For others, there always seems to be something that wants to make the experience more difficult or annoying. Case in point: Motorola's ICS release for the Droid RAZR Maxx and Droid 4 now identify whether or not you've ever rooted your phone - even if you've flashed back to pure, unrooted stock. There is a security check on newer Moto phones, if you ever root your phone they know. — @P3Droid August 25, 2012 When going into the recovery manager on these devices, there is a small code on the left below the options. It states "q/e" and then has a ratio behind it. If you're holding a phone coded qe 0/0, you're holding a non rooted device. For devices coded qe 0/1, you're holding a formerly rooted device, and of course qe 1/1 means the device in your hand...

ROM Manager updated to unhide your media files

Imagine you have your phone set to a custom ringtone you have stored on your SD card, and you miss a call for an important meeting or interview or whatever else because your phone didn't ring. You then go to your settings and discover that all your ringtones are gone! You had just flashed a new ROM, so your first instinct might be to post an excited and/or panicky comment on that ROM's thread, but you might not be aware of the true source of this issue: the 8/15/2012 update to ROM Manager. Thanks to Rootzwiki developer erishasnobattery (again ) who confirmed the bug, we now know that the reason why some of you may be missing your ringtones, pictures, videos, and audio files. ROM Manager, in its 5.0.1.3 update, placed a file called .nomedia on the root of your SD card, which causes the media scanner to skip the entire SD card when it scans your phone for media at startup. This will not only hide your ringtones, but also all of your other media files (don't worry, they...

Just because the Samsung Galaxy S3 isn’t available quite yet here in the States doesn’t mean that there aren’t already a number of talented developers working away on the tools that we’ll all be using for this device soon. We already knew that the SGS3 was easily rootable before it was even released . We can thank Samsung for at least being somewhat developer friendly, if not for releasing timely updates for their existing lineup - so it comes as no major surprise that the one and only Chainfire has released his CF-Root for the Galaxy S3 .If all that you really want to do is gain superuser access to run one or two programs (Titanium Backup, anyone?) or perhaps get rid of some of the bloat (Chuck Norris mode FTW!), then CF-Root is definitely a great way to go. Using ODIN to flash CF-Root to your brand new phone you will still be able to keep as close to stock as one can get; you will only be adding the SuperSU and CWM Manager applications as well as Chainfire’s own custom Cl...

BreakDroid: Auto Root and ADB Installer for Mac

Everyone loves a good auto-root tool, but the pickings for Mac tools are rather slim, with the majority of them (unsurprisingly) being developed for Windows or Linux. BreakDroid is a new Mac utility from Northmendo which uses previously established root methods to automatically root several devices, and also install the Android SDK, and configure ADB on your machine. While it's still a work in progress, the developer has noted that it is proven to work on at least 4 devices: Kindle Fire Droid Razr (and should work on all Motorola Droid devices) Galaxy Nexus Galaxy Note As the project grows, however, he will add as many devices as he can to the list. One of the exploits used is zergRush, though, so the following devices should also be compatible, though they have not been tested. Sony Xperia Arc (.42 f irmware) Sony Xperia Arc S Sony Xperia Play [R800i/R800x] Sony Xperia Ray Sony Xperia Neo Sony Xperia Mini Sony Xperia Mini Pro Sony Xperia Pro Sony Xperia Active Samsung...

HTC One X Rooted Ahead of Launch

The rooting community never ceases to astonish us. It usually doesn't take but a blink of the eye for a developer to achieve root access on a device, once the device is launched. It is a little rarer however for a device to be rooted before it's even out for mass consumption. Famous rom developer Paul "MoDaCo" O'Brien has done just that with the latest flagship device from HTC.The One X is the highly anticipated upcoming phone from HTC, and this bad-boy boasts some serious specs. While this first-to-appear root method isn't exactly the RootzWiki way (learn basic ADB people), MoDaCo has used superboot to achieve superuser access on the device. Superboot is a type of automated script file. So while it is much more reliable than your standard "one-click", just remember it is automated, meaning the process is ultimately out of the user's hands once started. This method is quite simple however. Connect the One X to your computer of choice and enter bo...

If you're the owner of a Sony Google TV, model number NSZ-GT1 or any of the current built-in models, and you've been waiting around for a way to root your GTV with a software-only solution, then today is your day. The GTV Hacker blog has devised a method by which you can gain root, no hardware hacking or soldering required.GTV in its most current form is far more capable a service than when it first launched back in 2010. Honeycomb has arrived, the Android Market is live, but there are still some limitations on the device. Most notably, the content blackout restrictions from some providers (like Hulu) are a constant aggravation for GTV owners. Now, though, your rooted GTV can get around those restrictions with the ability to run unsigned kernels, which remove content restrictions, as well as some other benefits listed below.Modified flash plugin with random per box flash string for Content Provider Bypass.Crippled update feature to prevent box from receiving automatic updat...

Motorola's successor to the Xoom, the 8.2" and 10.1" Xyboard tablets may still suffer from locked bootloaders, but a new exploit from Dan Rosenberg of the Virtual Security Research blog can help you gain root in a couple of very easy steps. Saurik . He's put together an implementation of an exploit for CVE-2012-0056, which was discovered by Jüri Aedla , and written up on Hacker News by Jason A Donenfeld . Devices running this kernel version are those on Ice Cream Sandwich, such as the Galaxy Nexus, or Asus Transformer Prime. This type of exploit can help in loading custom software onto devices that have locked bootloaders, like the Transformer Prime running Android 4.0.3. From Saurik : If you think this exploit could aid you in your work, we encourage you to check out Saurik's posting , where you can also download it.
