Maxthon Mobile Browser

A few years ago I used the Maxthon desktop browser and the IE add-in they offered to enable new features in Internet Explorer. It had tabs well before Microsoft dreamed of putting them in IE. It was the best IE alternative at the time if your company didn't allow you to use Firefox or Opera. When Chrome came out I switched away from it but now they have a way to build a customized Android browser . If nothing more than for nostalgia, I downloaded Maxthon's browser to try it out.If you visit Maxthon's site they have a page where you build yourself a customizable browser for Android with your own icon, set a custom home page, pick a theme and even upload a splash screen. It takes a few seconds to create an APK file for your phone. Install it and you have a tabbed browser the way you like it. They offered a browser product previously but the customization is a new twist. If you are going to build your own browser you will need a few items ahead of time. First, you w...

Quick Look: Two Craigslist Apps for Android

The Craigslist website , while being simple enough to get around on a phone browser, hasn't changed much over the past several years and definitely hasn't adapted itself to the increasingly mobile nature of its shoppers. This situation isn't helped at all by the lack of an official Android application; it's been up to interested third parties to fill the void. This Quick Look checks out a couple different options to help you find what you're looking for in a timely manner . The Craigslist Mobile app by Dudu Apps and Craigslist for Android (CLapp) by Trixie Soft are two examples of what the Play Store has to offer.I have bought several [s]cheap cars from Craigslist in the last few years. If you are a repeat user of Craigslist you know that it is better to keep up with the postings to track the new listings as well as the old. I know if a car has been posted for months and the listing is re-posted over and over again that they are probably best to be avoide...

App Preview: FX File Explorer

I found FX File Explorer Beta on the RootWiki Android Application Forum and decided to give it a try. The post was started by Tod Liebeck of Next App. Next App is the company behind System Panel, a really useful app which I have had used on every Android phone I have owned. FX is not your average File Explorer. The custom UI make s FX File Explorer extremely user friendly and efficient. FX File Explorer has so many user options it has the ability to replace all of the file utilities on your Android smartphone. I have not seen a more comprehensive or easy to use file explorer, for Android, anywhere. From the outset the app is impressive, with a home screen that utilizes a simple list format and gives users the ability to navigate all of FX's file exploring options; there is even a quick search box at the top of the home screen to help users locate files. Users can chose between list view or icons when viewing files. FX File Explorer users can choose from the following options...

Titanium Backup Pro Adds Google Drive Support

For all of those who change ROMs on a regular basis, the ability to back up and restore apps can be a big time saver. If you are one of the many users who make use of Titanium Backup to fill this need then you will glad to know that Google Drive support has been added for storing backed-up applications and data. Yes, you now have your choice of DropBox , Box.net , and Google Drive for off-device storage of your precious apks. Titanium Backup version 5.1 Pro (paid) version has added Google Drive support as well as the ability to filter cloud service backups. This means that you can specify which apps you want to backup to the cloud and which ones should only be local backups. If you are limited on storage space for your Google Drive, Box.net or DropBox accounts you can set it up to only backup critical apps. This is a great way to save your space while still offloading those apps you do not want to lose the data for.If you have multiple services you can now split up the backup...

After Focus: A Virtual DSLR For Android

I've often written about one of the many alternate cameras that were available on the Play Market. I often did this to show the awesome diversity of applications but also to make a point that there are many photo apps outside of the Instagram behemoth . After Focus is another application that has more of a focus on improving camera pictures for sharing within our networks. AfterFocus, developed by Motion One caught my attention with their tag line: "Bringing DSLR-like Photography to Your Smart Phone". That had me intrigued enough to spend a couple days with it. My Nexus S far too often tries to focus on as much of a camera area as possible, so any help to bring additional focus towards a desired object would help immediately. So I went around taking pictures of things.I found that there is a slighter element of clarity on the focused items. They most certainly improve the overall quality of the pictures. I am able to snap a picture or pull a photo from my gallery. Then...

YouTube For Google TV Updated

The past two months have seen some decent advancements for the YouTube application for Google TV. In the beginning, the navigation was lacking and channel discovery was less than fulfilling to the point of almost seeming to be non-existent. Not everything is fixed, but I do appreciate some newer features. The Google TV blog even stipulates big speed improvements. The the end result of these improvements is a product that feels less clunky than before. The updated app now allows video recommendations in the My YouTube tab. This should enhance that LeanBack experience Google is trying to find within this application. So far my recommendations have been strange, but when I look at my YouTube history overall, I realize I mostly watch videos that have been shared with me by my friends. I rarely search for content on YouTube unless I know specifically what I am looking for. The new grid layout is a much needed improvement. I was never on board with the sliding card system that mimicked...

Able Remote Review

Google TV development has been slow going lately, but there is one application that has made it feel worthwhile sticking with this entertainment experiment. Able Remote ventures into the remote app space with some convincing power features to compliment a full suite of well working basic functions. On the surface, this app does the same things that a typical GTV remove app performs. I can change channels, browse favorites, and other simple functions like powering the TV and AV receiver on and off. I’ve found voice commands to be an interesting novelty and something I hope they continue to develop and expand. The rest of the base features all worked well, including photo sharing, app or channel launching. The strengths are in the pro and power features. It took some time, but I was able to create a couple macros that enabled me to launch into my FiOS on demand and other more complicated commands. I was able to set up some web bookmarks for those sites that have streaming, like Rootz...

I have three teenage kids right now. If you have even one preteen or teenager in your house you know that they normally text non-stop. What are they talking about? Who are they talking to? If you are a concerned parent and you want to track their text messages without ever touching their phones, then you should setup SMS Backup+ by Jan Berkel on their phones. All 3 of my boys have Android phones and unlimited texting. Since they also have Gmail accounts attached to their phones I have setup SMS Backup+ to back up their text messages to their Gmail accounts. I have taught child safety classes educating parents on how to keep tabs on their kids' online habits. The one area that has always been a problem area in terms of tracking what your kids are doing is texting. There have been several well known cases of sexting that led teens to kill themselves over the embarrassment that they suffered from sending inappropriate pictures. Cyber bullying also tends to happen via text m...

Android Emulator Update Brings GPU Support, Speed Improvements

The Android Emulator. For developers, it's an important tool in testing your app, and up until now it's not been the most efficient piece of software around. A recent update for the emulator, though, is looking to change all that with some speed increases, as well as GPU support. In an Android Developer blog post this afternoon, the dev team has detailed some significant changes to the emulator that will make it a much better experience all around, as well as offering some new tools to get your job done.http://youtu.be/T--vFtyZvc4The new system image shipping in this update (Android 4.0.3r2) will have built-in GPU support, which the dev team says will add significant performance increases when it's in use. They're also supporting OpenGL ES 2.0 for your games, so that OpenGL games can now be run inside the emulator. New hardware features have also been added, including the ability to use a tethered device to supply inputs for sensors and multi-touch input. CPU perfor...

Max Payne Mobile Coming to Android

Rockstar Games is pretty iconic. Everyone went completely gaga over the release of Grand Theft Auto III for Android, so a lot of you will be very excited to hear that Rockstar is bringing another one of its great franchises, Max Payne , to the mobile gaming universe this month. The release date for Max Payne Mobile for Android will be April 26th, with iOS devices getting a small exclusivity period. (Their launch date is scheduled for April 12th.) Despite the exclusivity period, it's always nice to see big-name titles ending up on Android, since a chief complaint about our platform of choice is often that there aren't enough games to choose from.Gamers will get a chance to see the Beretta-wielding cop in action on their Android devices, and it will be interesting to see how well the original game mechanics translate to mobile. For example, how will Rockstar handle the ability to manipulate time in the mobile version? As we all know, mobile gaming without a controller can...

We have used several Twitter apps for our Android devices to include Plume, Issimo, Twitter for Android, Tweetcaster and Twicca. In the Twitterverse recently, people have been raving over Boid. Boid is a new and intuitive Twitter client that we cannot just look over without telling you about it, something has to be said, and by all means, it's great. http://i.imgur.com/R1KYW.png http://i.imgur.com/AjddJ.png http://i.imgur.com/lEXPl.pngAs you can see above, there is a metric ton of difference in feel and style of Boid.
In our rooted lives, we have all have to deal with a mess of backups and restores. There are times when we want to flash new ROMs, then only restore certain apps, or files from a previous ROM. There's a few utilities that offer selective app restoration, sure, but it would also be great to be able to browse each of our backups and pick out single files to restore or send to other devices. That's where Nandroid Browser comes in. Nandroid Browser is now available from Paradise Android in the Google Play Store.Nandroid Browser allows you to manually browse the contents of any nandroid backup, and then perform several functions with any of the individual files within. Using the browser, you can extract individual files to your device, share those files with your dropbox account, copy them to another folder on your device, or open them directly from the backup. Currently, the browser supports backups in the yaffs (.img) or ext4 (ext4.tar) formats, which includes Clockwork Recove...

Apex Launcher Leaves Beta: An In-Depth Look

As most of you know, there are a lot of launchers out there. In order to stay competitive, developers have to release homescreen replacements with an optimal balance of features, smooth performance, and customization. Since the release of Ice Cream Sandwich, the development community has been working on producing launchers that keep the beauty and experience of the stock ICS aesthetic but with additional customization and options. How well does Apex Launcher stack up against the competition? Apex Launcher, from developer Android Does , has just left beta and is now available in the Google Play Store. Like other ICS homescreen replacements, it keeps the original visual design of Ice Cream Sandwich, but with several additional treats. When you are first presented with your (default of five, but expandable up to nine) homescreens, you will notice that the much-lamented and normally static Google Search widget can be removed, and by default is only present on the primary homesc...

Reuters just delivered an "expose" on how Google has been heavy-handed in forcing developers to make all in-app payments through Google Wallet. Here are the best hits and how we view all of this. Google warned several developers in recent months that if they continued to use other payment methods - such as PayPal, Zong and Boku - their apps would be removed from Android Market, now known as Google Play, according to developers, executives and investors in mobile gaming and payment sectors. In early 2011, Android platform manager Eric Chu told a conference that while the number of Android smartphone users was surging, the number of purchases of paid apps in the Android Market was not doing nearly as well, Forbes reported. This is partly because the buying experience has been varied and confusing for users - reducing the chance that they will go through with a purchase, something known as conversion.By pushing all app developers to use Google's payment system, the experien...

For those that haven't here's the quick trick to get the update on your device. If you're running at least Android 2.2 or better, your device can switch over to the Google Play Store. For those that have yet to make the switch, though, and are burning with jealousy, you can now have the best of the ICS camera on your Gingerbread or Honeycomb device. The Camera ICS project from MOBLYNX has been ongoing for some time, but it's now available for download at Google Play in both a $.99 ad-free version, or a free ad-supported version. The most recent update has added the color effects, silent shutter mode, picture quality settings, video bitrate selection, video stabilization toggle, 720p face effects, and panorama mode and timelapse mode for Honeycomb.Panorama and timelapse alone are enough to warrant the download, and if you're busy making your Gingerbread ROM as ICS-like as possible while waiting for a working custom ROM, this is a must-have addition.
After a short but productive life, Google sadly decided to do away with App Inventor last year. However, in typical Google fashion, the project was Open Sourced so that it may live again. Now, after three months of setup time, MIT has released their version of App Inventor onto the Internet as a public beta.Cancelled in August 2011 as part of a Google streamlining process, the service was very popular among Computer Science teaching staff who applauded the surprising power it wielded through a simple interface. The MIT Center for Mobile Learning is delighted to announce that we’re meeting our goal of making MIT App Inventor available as a public service in the first quarter of 2012.For the past two months, we have been conducting a closed test of the system for an increasing number of testers, and we’ve currently scaled to 5000 testers. Today, we’re taking the next step, and opening the MIT App Inventor service to everyone. All you will need is a Google ID for log-in (for example, a...
