Tegra 3: Roadmap

At the upcoming MWC , NVIDIA looks to build upon Tegra 2’s success by debuting their new quad-core technology, Tegra 3. Their past year’s sales reached $360 million dollars and NVIDIA is looking to build upon that by increasing sales over Tegra 2 by 50% with their Tegra 3 chipset. NVIDIA plans to have Tegra 3 cores running inside many “superphones” and tablets during the 2012 fiscal year. This launch is also positioned to take advantage of Windows 8 on the horizon. Windows 8 figures to be a big part of their plans as far as deployment going forward. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has been quoted to say that Android tablets headline his expectations for sale of Tegra 3 but Windows 8 is going to play a large role as well. We have now three generations of Android operating systems and devices behind us. We have 10s and 10s of smartphones and 10s of tablets. We have engagements with nearly every single Tier 1 OEM in the world on the mobile side, as well as on the computing side. And so...

Android 4.0 OTA for SGSII Beginning March 1

Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100) owners will be excited to see their device software get upgraded from Android 2.3.X Gingerbread to 4.0.X! This will be one of the first phones to be getting the OTA update to Android's most current OS. Eldar Murtazin , tech insider, has confirmed this update starting on the first of March depending on the country and carrier. Android 4 aka ics for sgs2 is going to be officially offered by March 1(depends from county/operator). The best news is that Samsung has had plenty of time to add their custom UI overlay, TouchWiz to the Ice Cream Sandwich goodness. TouchWiz + Android 4.0 sounds lame in theory due to all the “extra features”, but I doubt there’s much they can do to take away the sheer awesome that is ICS. On December 20th last year, Samsung had announced that the Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab, and SGS2 devices would get the ICS update in near future, while not specifying an exact date. Another update from Samsung had stated that the SGS2 and Gala...

ASUS Releases Transformer Prime Bootloader Unlock Tool

Shortly after the release of the Transformer Prime, ASUS said in a statement that they would be releasing an unlock tool for the device's bootloader. They've made good on that promise today, and the unlock tool is now available! The tool is up for download on the official ASUS site , and can be found under the "utilities" heading. Once you get the file downloaded, it's pretty easy to use. It's an APK file, so download directly to your tablet, or copy it over. Run the app, let it work, and you have now unlocked the bootloader! However, by choosing to install you're signing the waiver absolving ASUS of any responsibility for damage you might cause by doing the root thing and using custom software. This means that the Prime is now a prime playground for developers to start crafting custom ROMs, kernels, and recoveries! If you're ready to start getting your hands dirty, you can get in on the action over at our Transformer Prime developer forum...

NVIDIA has used "The way it's meant to be played" for their marketing tagline for several years. With their recent introduction of the Icera modem family and the popularity of their Tegra series of SoC solutions, their motto could shift to "The way it's meant to be called." The Icera platform currently consists of three different modem variants and will be debuting on ZTE's Mimosa X, giving that phone the distinction of being the first phone available powered completely by NVIDIA.The Icera modem platform currently consists of three solutions, each meant for a different market segment. The three modems (and their specifications, from NVIDIA's press release) are:The Icera 450 HSPA+ smartphone and tablet platform The Icera 410 10MHz LTE and Dual Cell Platform and the Icera 400 HSPA+ Mobile Broadband Platform NVIDIA's one-two SoC/Modem combo punch is the latest in a series of modem/chip combinations, joining Intel as a provider of unified-platform...

Panasonic Tosses Their Hat into the Android Ring

Panasonic is pretty much a household name when it comes to electronics, but we don't really tend to think of them when it comes to mobile phones. Well it seems that might change since they're supposed to announce a few new devices at MWC. While details are slightly scarce at the moment, we can definitely tell you everything we know. And probably some things we don't. Eluga. It doesn't exactly just roll off the tongue, but it's what Panasonic has decided to call one of their flagship Android devices. This guy has a dual core OMAP 4430 clocking at 1 GHz per core, 1 GB ram, and 8 GB of built in storage; all complemented by a 4.3" QHD OLED screen and an 8 MP camera. While those specs may seem pretty normal for phones nowadays, there is one thing that is kind of shocking. The Eluga is waterproof. Yeah, waterproof. According to the specs, this thing is IP 57 certified, which means it can be in meter deep water for up to 30 minutes without any issues. So if you'...

Canonical Brings Full-Fledged Ubuntu to Android

Android and Linux is really a marriage that should have come about a long time ago. Android runs a Linux kernel, so the transition between the two should be pretty seamless. And now it is. No more will you need virtual machines or dual-boot systems. Canonical is introducing a parallel system that allows Android for mobile, and Ubuntu for the desktop, all in one device. With some extras.Canonical's announcement today details their introduction of Ubuntu to Android phones with at least 2 cores. Sorry, older devices. Clearly aimed at knocking Motorola's webtop software out of the game, the parallel experience of Android and Ubuntu is accomplished via a phone dock. That means that you won't be running Ubuntu while you're phone is undocked, unfortunately, but you will have your entire Ubuntu system available to plug and play with any monitor and your smartphone dock. Simply connect the device to a monitor and keyboard, or lapdock, and you have full control over the Ubunt...

Fujitsu has been serving the Asian phone sector for several years and developed a foothold in that market in both Android and Windows Phone sales. Reports are now surfacing that Fujitsu will announce its intentions to bring its line of mobile phones to Europe at the Mobile World Congress and potentially begin sales in the North American market in late 2012 or 2013. With HTC, Samsung, and Motorola already fiercely battling for the spot for several years, will Fujitsu be able to penetrate an already crowded market?Heading into the fray on two new continents for Fujitsu's handset wing, there are some major decisions for the company to make. Fujitsu has successful Android and Windows Phone products in Asia and is highly popular in the Japanese market. Android currently commands 50% of the smartphone OS share in American markets, but Windows Phone has a paltry 1.9%.
CM9 and Cornerstone: Is It a Good Idea?

Ever since it was Open Sourced earlier in the month, we’ve been hearing a lot about Cornerstone from Onskreen . Cornerstone allows multiple applications to run onscreen at the same time in different “frames.” Now it seems that there are plans (albeit loosely- based ones) to build Cornerstone into CyanogenMod 9. Since this announcement, however, a Google engineer has come forward with some compelling reasons as to why this level of modification might be a very bad idea. While Ice Cream Sandwich offered vast changes in the way multitasking was handled on Android, many feel there is still room for improvement. A Google + post from CyanogenMod contributor Sven Daw was the original announcement for experimentation with Cornerstone. After the post was shared by Steve Kondik there was an especially interesting comment from a Google framework engineer. Dianne Hackborn (who you might remember gave a certain battery myth a good busting) put forward this impassio...

MediaTek Launches Low-End Android Platform to Bring 4.0 to the Masses

MediaTek announced today a new Android platform designed to address the emerging low-cost smartphone market. Designated the MT6575, this platform combines a single-core 1GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, a graphics processor, and GSM/HSPA radios into a System-on-Chip package. This setup can also handle dual hot-swappable SIM cards and a variety of screen and camera resolutions. Will this be the chipset we see in developing markets and MVNOs over the next few years? For its mid-range offerings, the MT6575 can handle 720p high-definition recording and playback via a PowerVR SGX Series5 GPU; this will accommodate the qHD screen (960x540) and 8MP camera targets for this phone range. The system scales down well, providing usability and economy for the smaller screens, lower memory capacity, and less resolution-intensive cameras that will likely be found on many phones in emerging and pre-paid markets. The MT6575 platform also brings enhanced dual-SIM experiences to the Android platform.
Easter Egg Revealed in ICS Calendar Widget

Just when we thought we couldn’t love Android/Google any more, we read something like this and just have to smile. If you have a Galaxy Nexus (update: works on all ICS devices/ROMs), look closely at the contents of the stock Calendar widget. You will see this… http://rootzwiki.com/uploads/monthly_02_2012/ccs-30801-0-06543200-1328806353.pngTuesday, Sep 27 2pm-3pm – Bake Cookies & Make Ice Cream3pm-4pm – Time machine demo for Sergey4pm-5pm – Stop machine uprisingThat’s funny. The folks at MotoringCrunch have tried to read into the date to see if this may be some Easter Egg by Google announcing their next big thing (for reference Tuesday 9/27 occurs next in 2016) but we can safely assume this bit of cleverness is just what it seems: Android developers being nerdy utilizing the date of their company’s birthday. Or they could be preemptively encouraging us to prepare for the impending robot Armageddon. Either one seems plausible.

It's no secret these days that Google wants to be number one when it comes to handling the world's personal data. Some would say Google is clearly already the champ, but the company isn't showing any signs of stopping soon. Firing on all cylinders, Google is looking to topple the cloud-storage empire with its latest project. The mad scientists over at El Goog are working on a direct rival to the current kings of the sky, Dropbox and iCloud, with their latest service known as Drive. The Wall Street Journal reports that multiple silicon valley sources have stated that Google Inc. is gearing up to drop it's latest bomb on the tech world with it's very own cloud-based storage system. Drive will allow users access to video, photos, and other documents from PC, Mac, and various mobile devices. It's also rumored that like most of Google's services, Drive will be free for users, at least initially. The Register also reports that we can expect to see the service...

ASUS continues to show why it is a first tier hardware company, pushing out yet another update to address problems that users are experiencing with their Transformer Prime tablets. The latest update addresses WiFi and Bluetooth issues, as well as a host of instability problems that users have brought to their attention. If only all Android device manufacturers had this type of issue response time! The new update, arriving less than a month after the initial update rolled out, updates the kernel and other components. The WiFi driver notches up to 6.1.1.18, the BlueTooth driver moves to version 9.26, and the tablet software moves to build IML74K.US_epad-9.4.2.13-20120203. Reports from around the web point to an increase in stability across a range of applications.
Lenovo ThinkPad - ICS OTA

Lenovo has announced that its ThinkPad tablet offering will be receiving an OTA update to Android 4.0 aka Ice Cream Sandwich. Owners can expect the upgrade to begin starting in May 2012. This update brings improvements and several new features including the browser, voice input and face unlock. The browser is getting a big upgrade in terms of speed and user friendliness. Also, voice input is going to be beefed up and function similarly to how it does on the Galaxy Nexus. While you speak, the words appear on the screen, and your voice input engine underlines the text that it thinks it heard properly but might be translated incorrectly. When you’re finished speaking, all you need to do is tap these words and suggestions for the correct words will then appear. Face unlock, one of the more flashy features of ICS will allow the unlocking of the device with solely the person’s face. This is one of those features that the manufacturer may choose to activate or deactivate before pushing the...

Many of us Android users are waiting with barely-concealed excitement to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich as our daily driver, and no more anticipated ROM is coming available than the world's favorite, Cyanogenmod. The CM team, today, has released an update on their progress , and the future has never looked more promising. In the last update we got, the team informed us of some major changes to the Android internals, namely graphics drivers that were standing in the way of a stable build for the majority of devices. That obstacle is still in place, however, they remain confident that they can overcome this challenge. The biggest issue with the graphics drivers is the closed-source nature of most of them, and the fact they don't become available until a devkit is released for any particular device. As Ice Cream Sandwich is such a major overhaul from Gingerbread, the CM team started the new project essentially from scratch, building the new ROM off of a fresh codebase from Go...

Have you ever dreamed about navigating through your day to day like Arnold in the Terminator movies? Well, those days may not be too far ahead of us. Our best friends over at Google are working on HUD (heads up display) glasses, reportedly resembling Oakley’s Thump glasses. These glasses are purported to have one lens acting as the display with LCD or AMOLED being the technology used, rumors of dual 3D configurations and transparency seem to be just that at this point. It cannot be stressed enough that this product will not be just an Android peripheral; it will likely be packing “generation old” smartphone technology spcifications. This includes a 1gHz processor, 256MB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage. Speculation is that it will be offer Bluetooth 4.0 and/or WiFi for Internet connectivity and will also have a GPS chip on board. This means that as you meander about your home, these glasses will report information about your location to Google’s cloud and the display that informat...
