Can Apple's Siri Be Believed?

If Apple really wants Siri to ever be taken seriously as a personal assistant app that users can rely on, then I think the recent change in the system to no longer say that the Lumia 900 was the best smartphone ever was a big mistake. I find it interesting that the new answers don't come out and directly say that the iPhone is the best smartphone but the indication is clearly there. This bothers me on multiple levels, but clearly the integrity of the answers now has to be questioned. Earlier this week I saw several posts about how Siri told users that the Nokia Lumia 900 was the best smartphone ever . As a response, Apple has changed the answers to now say "you're kidding, right?" or "the one you're holding". The results of most questions asked of Siri comes from Wolfram Alpha so there had to be some reason that the Lumia was the answer Siri gave. Apple has decided to override this answer in favor of using its product to promote itself. I don...

Samsung Updates List of Devices Getting ICS

Samsung has released their complete list of devices that will be receiving an official upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich. Unlike previous lists, this one (finally) includes phones on the T-Mobile network that will be receiving this update. While not unexpected, the failure of Samsung to update any of the still-capable Galaxy S-class devices to Android 4.0 is disheartening and a violation of their Google Update Alliance pledge .The Samsung devices getting the official ICS update for T-Mobile are the Samsung Galaxy S II (SGH-t989), Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G (SGH-t769), Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus (SGH-t869), and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 (SGH-t859). For those that own other Samsung devices powered by Android like the Vibrant 3G/4G, Exhibit, and others, we apologize for Samsung's refusal to honor their promise to provide you with 18 months of OS upgrades and maintenance updates. This is only a list and no actual dates have been released. If you are like many of us in the Android Commu...

The Great Galaxy Letdown?

Why So Disappointed? Many have expressed disappointment at what Samsung announced to the world last week in London despite the Galaxy S3 being superior in nearly every aspect to its two most recent predecessors (while the Galaxy Note is an impressive phone in its own right, it is marketed as a phone/tablet hybrid as opposed to the Galaxy SII and the Galaxy Nexus phones). Personally, I find the widespread feeling of disappointment in the international version to be something of a head-scratcher, but it is somewhat more understandable in the case of U.S. consumers. In any event, a closer look reveals several key reasons for the deflated expectations that many had.The Lockdown Fuels The LetdownThe unprecedented security Samsung surrounded its 2012 Galaxy S model with had the effect of fueling wild speculation among outsiders as to what the new device would feature. This is, of course, Samsung’s intent, as it builds up iPhone-esque hype in the weeks prior to the official unveiling. This...

Quick Look: The Latest Google Maps Update

Google Maps has long been one of the premiere apps and widely utilized across many platforms. Wednesday afternoon, the latest update pushed bringing some integration with other applications and expanded indoor search capability. The latest update serves to further round out the navigation experience:Discover nearby Google Offers in the USIndoor walking directions (Beta) for Japan and the USSee 360° panoramas inside restaurants and stores I have yet to be at a venue or location where indoor maps have been set up, but two good examples of how indoor mapping works is the San Francisco Airport and the Mall of America. Places like that which are just too hard to navigate on foot really benefit from having specific locations mapped out. On the phone we are also able to select the floor we are on which benefits locations that have several stories, like the Mall of America. I'm also yet to see indoor panoramas work, but over time, we will be able to get better bearings on large or eve...

Virgin And Boost Mobile Introduce 4G Smartphones For The Pre-Paid Market

On Tuesday, both Virgin Mobile and Boost Mobile introduced new 4G smartphones as well as pre-paid 4G data plans. Since both networks piggyback on the Sprint network, it comes as no surprise the devices are hand-me-down Sprint phones that run on WiMax as Sprint moves toward LTE devices.Virgin Mobile's first 4G smartphone is the HTC EVO V 4G (pictured above, on the right), which is essentially last year's EVO 3D yet without all the 3D hype. Sprint is hoping the re-branded device will be a better success in the pre-paid market than the original. The EVO V 4G comes out of the box running Android 4.0 with Sense 3.6, which already puts it ahead of 95% of Android phones in terms of software. Other specs include dual 5MP cameras with video and 3D HD imaging, 1.3MP front-facing camera, 4.3-inch qHD touchscreen, 1730mAh battery, 1GB RAM/4GB ROM, micro SD slot up to 32GB (8GB card included), HDMI and Bluetooth-capable, and of course WiMax connectivity. The HTC EVO V 4G will be available...

Google Wallet and Sprint have been busy these last couple of weeks. It all started with the release of the Galaxy Nexus running on Sprint's 4G LTE. With the purchase and activation of the Sprint Galaxy Nexus, users receive a $50 in Google Wallet credits. Sprint also welcomes Google Wallet to the LG Viper 4G LTE & LG Optimus Elite . Sprint customers are the only ones currently who have options to choose between several Google Wallet ready devices. While this might seem like great news only to Sprint Customers, there is more to the story that will make other Wallet users happy.Google Wallet on "approved" devices can be easily tallied. However, expect more devices to appear in the market with Google Wallet ready to go. MasterCard recently announced that they have approved 16 smartphones from HTC, Intel, LG, Nokia, RIM, Samsung, and Sony that allow them to utilize PayPass NFC technology. Many of these manufactures build Android smartphones so it is safe to project...

There were rumors that Samsung would delay the inevitable release of their 10.1" version 2 tablet to provide a four core experience, but according to the Office Max and Amazon preorder websites, it looks like that is not the case.
Google Play Now Allows Direct Carrier Billing

Google has updated the billing options for Google Play. Google is working with carriers to bring their subscribers the ability to charge Google Play content (applications, books, movies, music) to your cell monthly cell phone bill. The participating United States carriers include AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. For the complete list of carriers and country check out Google's Direct Carrier Billing information chart . This is a nice option to have that I am sure many will enjoy. The upside of this option is that no credit card or registration is required. Personally, I would prefer to have these two bills separately. Multiple purchasing options are great for everyone as the most convenient way can be picked. How do you prefer purchasing your Google Play content? Do you prefer to stick to your Credit Card or are you ok with adding to your carrier's monthly bill?

Amazon Releases Cloud Drive Desktop Application

A week after Google's announcement and release of Google Drive , Amazon has released their own Cloud Drive Desktop Application . The Cloud Drive service is not new to Amazon; it was simply lacking the desktop experience. This application works on systems running Windows XP, Windows 7, and Mac OS 10.6/7. Users will be able to upload files or folders to their Amazon Cloud storage by either drag and drop to the Cloud Drive icon or Right-click any file or folder and send to Amazon Cloud Drive. Unlike Google Drive or Dropbox , Amazon Cloud Drive Application does not have a sync folder. This is a feature that is must have for services like these. It is very easy to use and convenient. If Amazon wants to be able to compete with Google and Dropbox this is a feature that will need to be integrated soon. You are given 5GB of free storage like Google Drive with the option to purchase addition storage. To install the application check Amazon Cloud Storage . At this time, there is no Andro...

LG Focusing on Android; Sorry, Windows Phone!

LG has announced that they will be sticking with Android and will not be planning to release another LG manufactured Windows Phone any time soon. This just solidifies many people's assumptions since LG failed to display any new Windows Phone 7 devices at Mobile World Congress this past February. After posting a profit for the first time following seven quarters of losses, it's fairly obvious that this is a business decision to stick with the platform that offers the best chance at generating revenue for the company."The total unit of Windows Phone sold in the global market is not a meaningful figure,” said the LG spokesman. This does not bode well for Microsoft when a phone manufacture says Windows Phones are not profitable. LG however did not cut all ties with Microsoft but merely is putting it on hold. The LG Representative said the company will “continue research and development efforts” on Windows Phones. “Ballmer, who will speak about the ‘new era of technology,’ wi...

Net Neutrality Advocates Take Their Fight to the Corporate Shareholders

Last week at the annual AT&T shareholders meeting the shareholders overwhelmingly rejected a proposal which would have instituted net neutrality for AT&T's wireless business, a concept that the big wireless companies have fought against for years. While the resolution only garnered 5.9% favorable votes, it was small victory for net neutrality advocates because the advocates met the threshold to allow it to be voted on again next year. It is expected that similar votes will occur for Verizon Wireless and Sprint within the next two weeks. The large wireless companies seem staunchly opposed to implementing net neutrality. Net neutrality is a concept that calls for no regulation at all on the internet. Net neutrality is opposed by telecom companies because it restricts their ability to manage net speeds and the type of content which a user can have access. Telecom companies oppose efforts to limit their ability make decisions on how their networks should run and impede their...

Mobile payments are nothing new to world of Android. There are myriad ways to make and take payments, and some establishments even allow you to settle your tab without having to mess with paper receipts. Restaurant chain TGI Fridays has thrown their hat in the ring and released their own app that lets you pay for your meal with your phone. Check, please! At first glance, this new app from TGI Fridays might seem like any other app from a restaurant. You can search for locations near you and get driving directions, browse the menu and specials, but there's another special feature. You can pay your tab from your phone without having to wait for the waitstaff to bring you a check. It's powered by TabbedOut , a mobile payment app for Android and iOS that's been out a while, but with limited available locations.
Samsung Updates U.S. ICS Release List

Samsung has announced their tentative plans for releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for existing US devices. To say that the list is disappointing is an understatement. AT&T has the most devices on the list with phones such as the Galaxy S II and Galaxy Note getting the go ahead which you would expect considering their specs. Sprint already had an update available for their Nexus S 4G but also added the Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch. Verizon is updating their Tab 10.1 and 7.7 models only. The Wi-Fi models of the Tab 7.0 Plus, 8.9 and 10.1 will also receive ICS.The elephant in the room is the lack of updates for T-Mobile. The official list states:We are in close communication with T-Mobile to ensure that eligible devices are upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in the coming months and will provide updates as we have additional details to share. While the other carriers may not be updating many devices, it is a real shock that T-Mobile and Samsung cannot get any phones updated....

A post on the Sprint Community boards this morning gave some assurances, but no time frame for an upcoming update from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich. The post does also mention that more information about when the release will roll out will be posted soon. At this point, we only know that it will update some time in 2012.From the Sprint forums:Sprint will begin to roll out Google's latest version of Android™, Ice Cream Sandwich, to our customers in 2012. Ice Cream Sandwich will be available via an over-the-air update to a variety of devices including Galaxy™ S II, Epic™ 4G Touch and Nexus S™ and other key products in our line-up. Stay tuned for more details and exact timing. The announcement of a Sprint-connected phone receiving an update to ICS is not new, but is a rarity in that it is the first phone confirmed by Sprint to receive the update. Even though HTC and Motorola have both listed Sprint-sold phones as in the queue to receive updates to Android 4.0, Sprint has rema...

SwiftKey recently sent out an email asking members of their VIP Program to for help them win a Webby Award. The Webby is an award for digital excellence and Webby awards are broken down into two categories - the Webby and Webby People’s Choice Award. SwiftKey is looking for public help in winning the people’s choice award in the Mobile & Apps - Experimental & Innovation category. If you are not familiar with SwiftKey, they have been around for a while and currently have two official iterations of the app - SwiftKey and SwiftKey X. Many times, a user can write almost entire sentences just using predictions.

With the release dates upon us for the new Galaxy Tab 2 7" and 10.1" tablets , I think we have to start questioning what Samsung's strategy is these days. They typically sell phones and tablets that were at the medium to high end of the price scale. They have always had decent hardware devices but they were loaded with older software versions of the OS. A quick root and ROM or two later you are running the latest OS and you had stellar hardware to match. So it was exciting to hear that Samsung was finally releasing some lower priced tablets running ICS, but I am disappointed with the lackluster hardware specs they are offering. These tablets are to be released with dual core 1GHz processors, 8 or 16GB of internal storage and 1GB of RAM. The screens are decent displays with a 1024x600 PLS TFT display for the 7" tablet and a 1280X800 display on the larger 10.1" tablet. Obviously, these are not the low end of the market but they are certainly midrange at best....

Google’s Future: Life-Caching

A few months ago, my friend +Nick Crawford and I were pontificating on the future direction that Android, Google’s cell-phone operating system, might take in the future. We eventually found ourselves talking about life-caching. Nick referenced a book named “Future Files: A History of the Next 50 Years ” by futurist Richard Watson. In his book, Watson talks about an idea called “life-caching.” The concept is that essentially everything you do, every conversation you have, every place you go, everything you look at - literally everything - will be cached for indexing and at your fingertips to reference at a later date.Almost prophetically, in the last month, reports started to surface about something called “Google Glasses ”. Recently we have seen promotional videos and pictures of Sergey Brin wearing them in public. Google Glasses, now named “Project Glass” seems like a very real possibility. If you have not had a chance to view the promotional video check it out here .These “Google...

Likewise, Three has put the One X and S up for pre-order, though they don't list prices on their page. They do list an April 4th release date, though.
