Google Search Updated: Brings New Cards and Features

Yesterday was a day full of overhauls and updates that were announced during the keynote address at Google I/O. We have seen a future update to Google Maps , a new subscription service and a new look for Google Music , the new Google Hangouts Messaging service , Google Wallet integration with Gmail , and an update to Google Search, which includes some new cards for Google Now.Google Now is rapidly becoming almost a second Android platform, and now has additional cards in its deck. Before I put those on the table, though, I will mention some other aspects of Google's core business that have been updated. To start with, notes and reminders just got smarter. Users can now remind themselves to complete a task at a certain time with a voice command. For example, by saying, "Remind me to take out the trash when I get home" Google Now will not only set a reminder but it will notify you about your task when you get home. A host of other conversational commands were demonstrated...

Google's cross-platform messaging service finally arrives... as "Hangouts"

The long-awaited cross-platform messaging service from Google has finally arrived, and it is called Hangouts (unfortunately for you "Babel" fans). Hopefully, the "Hangouts" name won't be confusing to you (editor's note: ironically, "Babel" is the ancient Hebrew word for "confusion"). Google Hangouts was already a widely-used feature on Google+ before this announcement, but now it encompasses more than simple video chats over the Google+ platform. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XkpjZ7oA_QgHangouts brings Google's messaging service across multiple platforms, making it easier to stay connected and share content across any device. No doubt many of you grew tired of having to check different Google services (Google+ Hangouts, Google+ Messenger and Gtalk) to communicate with your contacts. The new Hangouts merges all three services into one client, though we're still waiting for Google Voice and SMS integration.Th...

It truly is Christmas in May this year, as it seems to be every year for Google users. Google I/O never fails to bring us new features & services to enjoy. Straight out of left field, the Gmail team took to its blog to announce a new feature I think very few people saw coming - Google Wallet is now integrated in Gmail, allowing users to send cash to friends and family through email.http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=JA8m0JOoNYQWith this feature, you will be able to send money to any email address not only Gmail. It is free to send money only if you have your bank account linked to your Google Wallet OR if you happen to have a balance in your Google Wallet. However if you look to send money using a linked up credit or debit card then fees will apply. Applicable fees are listed here , but suffice it to say each transaction carries a flat fee of 2.9% with a minimum transaction amount of $0.30. If you are the recipient of the money transfer you are freed...

New APIs Added to Google Play Services

The first thing on Google's agenda at today's I/O keynote was applications. Its presenters talked about how many people are now using Android and how many devices have been activated. The numbers were enormous. Over 900 million Android devices have been activated. That's amazing. Of course, Google was quick to point out that this is only the beginning.Today Google announced several new APIs that are going to be included in Google Play Services. These new APIs will allow for better and richer applications that make our phones more useful and enjoyable. Google announced several location APIs, an update to its Google+ sign in, cloud messaging, and the much anticipated game APIs.Where am I? The new location APIs are something that we can all benefit from. Have you ever been trying to find your way somewhere but your phone is dying quickly because GPS is draining your battery? To address that issue, Google announced a new API that should make apps with GPS a little less batt...

NVIDIA unveiled Project Shield during CES 2013, much to the surprise of many. A handheld gaming device running stock Android Jelly Bean with some monster specifications was understandably the center of attention in January. After repeated teasers in the months since, we couldn't help but want more information about Project Shield. We need wait no longer - as of today Project Shield will be known as Shield and is finally available for Pre-Order.NVIDIA's move to dump the "Project" moniker is evidently a marketing ploy meant to present Shield as a finished product rather than a project. It's easier to write, less cluttered, and sounds cleaner than NVIDIA's Project Shield. The name change is clearly mean to convey that NVIDIA ready to offer the Shield to the public. Beginning today you can finally pre-order NVIDIA's Shield for $349, a very reasonable price, especially when compared to other Android devices you can purchase for the same price. If you w...

Google Merges Gmail, Drive and Google+ Photos Storage, bumps you up to 15GB shared

In the past, storage space between Gmail and Drive (not to mention Google+ Photos) has been confusing and difficult to manage. In an effort to simplify your cloud storage, the Google Drive team took to its blog Monday to announce that storage between Google Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos will be combined, giving you 15GB in common storage. This comes as a welcome change to the counterintuitive storage alloctations of 10GB to Gmail and 5GB to Drive and Google+ Photos. When Google announced that it was increasing the storage for our Gmail accounts to 10GB I was both excited and flabbergasted. Although more storage is always welcome, I always believed it was an excessive amount space for an email service. Looking back, it's actually ironic that I remember having numerous conversations with friends and colleagues on how Google should have offered more space for Drive, where 10GB would go a longer way for me than it would in Gmail. Before the update, each service showed you the st...

No Need For S-Off, HTCDev Unlock Does The Job On HTC One

In the past HTCDev unlock has still left some hurdles for developers to overcome, and until S-Off (security-off) was achieved on those devices things like flashing custom kernels was a chore and required additional software like FlashimageGUI to get it done. According to well-known developer Koushik Dutta, who recently wrote a G+ post to clear up some misunderstandings about S-Off , this will not be a problemin the case of the HTC One.In fact, he mentioned in an earlier G+ post that unlocking the HTC One via HTC's dev unlock process causes the phone to "behave just like a Nexus ," ready to flash anything other than custom radios. Koushik Dutta points out that there are two different things we want to do when we root and flash custom firmware on our HTC devices, and he explained it in a very simple manner that should alleviate some of the confusion about HTCDev Unlock does in terms of the HTC One.Being able to flash a custom ROM (boot, recovery, system)Being able to flash...

It was just recently that my colleague Marvin Ferrell analyzed the new Halo feature by the Paranoid Android Team as it was demonstrated on Oode's YouTube channel. It is said that Chat Heads, a feature in Facebook Home for Android, inspired Paranoid Android's latest innovation. It truly revolutionizes the way you check your notifications and work with multiple apps at once. The feature was said to be "coming soon,” but is now available for select devices, much sooner than I expected.Paranoid Android announced the release of the alpha rom for the Nexus 4, the GSM and WiFi versions of the Nexus 7, the GSM version of the Galaxy Nexus and the Oppo Find 5. As the team stated on its Google+ post , "This is still a very early build. No bug reporting here please. Do not install this if you dislike previews/alphas.
Google Play comes to Nook HD and HD+

The last Nook tablet I owned was the Nook Color. As much as I liked that device, it was a pain having to root the device to get access to its full potential. When I first saw and held the Nook HD I was interested in learning more. However, Barnes & Noble's (B&N) commitment to a strict ecosystem was a major reason I never went back. However, in a stunning reversal, Barnes and Noble promised that it will soon be pushing out an update that will be bringing Google's Play Store to both the Nook HD & HD+. Apparently, I was not the only who was turned off by B&N's ecosystem policy. Practically without warning, though, the company has done a complete 180 and have opened up the Nook HD & HD+'s app ecosystem. The addition of Google's Play Store will give users of those tablets access to more movies, TV shows, books, magazines, and 750,000 applications - a major upgrade from the 10,000 applications currently found on the Nook App Store, and even over the...

A month and a half ago LivingThroughGlass reported on some code that was discovered that suggested Eye Gestures in Google Glass. Developer Mike DiGiovanni posted some pictures & a video on Google+ demonstrating his application that utilizes eye gestures. The name of the application is called "Winky" and source code is currently available on Github . Winky on Google Glass allows you to go from standby mode to snapping a quick picture by simply winking your eye. During a report with The Verge, Mike DiGiovanni states that Google Glass has "pretty cool sensor algorithms that can detect the magnitude and lengths of winks." So if you were worried that Winky would activate with a simple blink you have nothing to worry about. Google Glass can distinguish the difference between a wink and a blink. He also tells The Verge that he has "stumbled across some code that even appears to detect blinks, double blinks, and double winks." You can see "Winky" in a...

Google Glass gets more and more interesting with each passing day. Videos for the project started with Google's vision for Google Glass , followed by a Glass Promo video , then unboxing videos , more recently by one showing how to use voice commands with Google Glass, and most recently on Wednesday with a "How-to" video from Google itself. If you were, wondering how Google Glass worked and what the user interface (UI) looks like, this video will provide the answers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EvNxWhskf8The video does a great job demonstrating how to navigate through Glass's UI using the touch pad. It explains the UI is like a timeline built by cards. Cards on the left are items that are happening now or coming up (weather & calendar events), while the tiles on the right are cards from the past. It also shows how to interact with cards to view more information or perform actions.During an interview with BBC last week, Eric Schmidt indicated that a final con...

Google I/O has become quite the show over the past few years. We have come to expect a spectacle complete with stunts, giveaways, and major announcements from the Mountain View company. The conference is still intended primarily for developers (believe it or not) and the 2013 schedule predictably reflects an emphasis on development. The keynote has been whittled down to a single 3-hour presentation on May 15th. Google will no doubt show off the latest from the Android team, Chrome, Google Plus, Glass, and more. Most of the news and hoopla from I/O will probably focus from that keynote. We will provide coverage for it as well, so keep an eye on breaking news from us as it happens.Once the noise settlesafter the keynote, and all the media and non-developers have left, Google will begin with an overview session of what's new in Android gaming. Also on Wednesday, there will be sessions featuring Google Maps and Android's framework as it relates to custom views. The sessions pick...

Twitter App for Google Glass Spotted?

With Google Glass Explorers out in the wild we have seen some great content uploaded by Google Glass users. It was just a matter of time until popular applications like Twitter made its way to Google Glass. John Doerr of venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins hinted a Twitter application coming to Google Glass during Glass Collective. It seems like the Twitter for Glass has been in testing since, and it recently was spotted in the wild.User Shivster Muddler (@MogroothMuddler ) shared a photo on Twitter with the hash tag "#throughglass .” What makes this tweet different is that the tweet indicates that it was submitted by "Twitter for Glass.” What makes this more intriguing is that the word Twitter is in the label. The reason this is important is that Twitter is the only developer allowed to use the word Twitter in labels. When looking deeper into the account that released the tweet it had no bio or valuable information. The tweet was later deleted followed by the entire accoun...

Google+ Developers announced Tuesday that they are bringing "App Activity" to Google Search, meaning that a section to the right of the search results will incorporate more user-focused information. Google's release of Google+ Sign-in enables this feature, which promises to include more web apps over time. When users search for a site that doubles as a web app, Google Search will bring "app activity" to your results. This is an attempt to help users learn more about the application and gather important information at a glance. The app activity depends on the searched application but it consists of popular and aggregate user activity in Google+. For example, searching Fandango will display popular movies in a section to the right of search results, while searching SoundCloud will show how many users are listening to a given track. Google is rolling out this new feature in desktop Search over the next few weeks, starting with music and movie web apps that include...
