Those of us with LG's G2X/Optimus 2X in our pockets are more than ready to leave behind previous versions of Android, and adopt Ice Cream Sandwich. The Cyanogenmod team certainly looks like our best bet at this point, and you can now test drive the latest Android version, courtesy of Rootzwiki's arcee .The developer is part of the team working on CM9 for the G2X, so he knows his stuff. arcee has dropped a couple of self kang builds of CM9 for the LG-P990 and P999. Those are the Optimus 2X and G2X, respectively. These are early releases, however, and should not be considered daily drivers. If you caught the last update from the CM team , you're aware that work is proceeding apace for several new devices, however some key drivers for things like the camera have yet to become available. You'll find the same problem in this build. There's also no media acceleration, no video decoding, and some ICS apps such as the Chrome beta aren't working. And since this is sor...

Amazon's Kindle Fire sure is one hot product in the custom rom department these days. The little tab that could has already been graced with some truly great projects like MIUI and has had an early taste of Ice Cream Sandwich thanks to a Cyanogenmod 9 port. Now, thanks to the hard working team over at MIUI, the Fire has received one of the hottest new roms on the block, MIUI 4.MIUI 4 is a blend of everything you love (or hate) about MIUI with some of the best features rolled in from Android 4.0. This version for the Kindle Fire is not quite the complete package but does bring a majority of the popular features to the table. Several MIUI utilities such as backup and file explorer have made the cut along with many of the standard Google Apps including the official Android Market.
When it comes to custom roms, MIUI is one of a few names that instantly appears in the minds of a majority of the rooting community. The MIUI experience is extremely popular for its unique approach towards the Android operating system. Yesterday was huge day for the fans of Xiaomi's interface as the company has dropped a massive bomb on the Android world. For the first time MIUI is finally sharing its goodies and will go open source. Yes it's true, Xiaomi has decided to open the flood gates upon the developers of the world and has begun open sourcing its Android application development. While it's not the entire system, this is some refreshing news as Xiaomi has tried to keep the interface as locked down as possible for quite some time now. The company has also made a statement saying that if they feel the project is successful they will continue to add more applications and code in the future.MIUI fanboys of the world rejoice! Developers can head over here to chec...

Touchwiz Introduced to Ice Cream Sandwich

Ice Cream Sandwich is on the rise! Custom roms for the new version of Android have started pouring out of the floodgates and we couldn't be more excited. With the influx of 4.0 roms however, a lot of the manufacturers with custom Android UI overlays are noticing their versions of Android being put on the backburner lately. Samsung wants to remedy that by updating their own Touchwiz UI to run hand and hand with Ice Cream Sandwich. Even if vanillia Android is your bag, what we're seeing so far just might be worth a second look.Arguably one of the more popular Android overlays, Touchwiz UI has a fairly decent reputation inside the Android community. This is for a good reason too, Samsung seems to really listen to their users when it comes to updating their user interface. Touchwiz uses Samsung's own TW-launcher along with various other tweaks to AOSP to create a unique Android experience. Well, the guys over at SamMobile have come across one heck of a custom rom for...

ICS Roms and Ports Directory

Perhaps you've heard of a little thing from Google called Ice Cream Sandwich? Everyone with an Android wants to get a bite, and with the wait for the Galaxy Nexus finally over, no one wants to be left behind. Fortunately, we have a ton of developers who are hard at work bringing ICS to as many devices as possible. We're attempting to gather as many ROMs and Ports as we can in an all-in-one resource for our members, to give you quick access to what's available. With this thread you can see if your device has a ROM or port, and also find the threads where you can monitor the progress of their development. Likewise, if you have a partner or team that you are developing with, and we didn't mention them please let us know. We want to give proper credit where it's due.Note to developers:This is an ongoing thread where we want to show off your work. If we've missed a ROM or port of ICS that you're working on, please comment about it in the comment section, and i...

One Vicious Project Updated: They Did It!

Updated: About a month ago, we reported to you about a very special project that was being developed for the HTC Thunderbolt . Team Vicious was attempting to do the impossible by porting the closed source MIUI over to a 4g device. Without source code for this being available, many thought it was an impossible task. Well right here on RootzWiki, we’ve been privileged enough to watch the impossible become reality in front of our very eyes.We couldn’t be happier for everyone involved in making this project happen. This is definitely a task that all who helped on should be extremely proud of. MMS still isn't quite there, but all the phone, sms, 3/4g data and wifi you can handle is at your fingertips. Hopefully, this will also help any other poor souls who try to port this bad boy over to another 4G device in the future. But for now, everyone can jump here to enjoy you some Thunderbolt MIUI goodness. Thanks again guys, we appreciate all you do!

Expanded List of CM7.1 Officially Supported Devices

Announced late last night, the CyanogenMod team has expanded their list of devices to be receiving officially supported nightlies, lots of these devices already have builds of CM7 out there but the official build bot will now be cranking out builds for these devices. There are a couple big, top-end handsets on this list and a slew of newly supported Sony-Ericsson devices. This may very well be the last round of CM supported Sony-Ericsson devices as Sony purchased the Swedish device maker Ericsson last week for roughly 1.47 billion dollars. The implications of the purchase have yet to be fully realized but it seems that neither company will be producing feature handsets in the future. The devices that headline this announcement are the Samsung Galaxy S II and the Motorola Atrix on AT&T. Other new, officially supported devices include: LG Optimus Black, Xperia X10i, Xperia X8, Xperia Play, Xperia Ray, Xperia Mini Pro, Xperia Mini, Xperia Active, Xperia X10 Mini Pro, Xperia X10 Min...

ICS + Game Controller Support = Delicious Gaming Dessert!

The quest for the true classic gaming experience has been somewhat of a struggle for the Android platform. Emulators come and go as does support for various types of controllers. Some are more reliable than others in both cases, but it’s very difficult to have great support for things like USB controllers across the many, many android devices. Ice Cream Sandwich aims to remedy that with USB game controller support built right into the operating system. PS3 and Xbox, we’re looking at you!So what does this really mean? Keyboards and Mice have been supported for a while now, as have a few game controllers but with mixed results. With support built right into the OS now, this should make it a breeze to play almost all of your old favorites and current games on the horizon (GTA III) with a good old fashioned buttoned controller. As we all know, the touch screen is a beautiful thing, but it just doesn’t cut it for hardcore gaming. This should allow any android 4.0 device to be powerh...
