Galaxy S IV Google Edition unveiled at I/O - unlocked bootloader, non-Nexus price

It turns out that the rumors are true - Samsung is indeed manufacturing a Google Edition of its popular Galaxy S IV, as announced earlier at Google's I/O event. The phone will run stock Android 4.2.2 (as of now, the latest version of Android, since there has not yet been any announcement of a 4.3 update). Also, the bootloader will be unlocked, but this piece of nerdvana will come at the hefty price of $649 (hefty compared to the Nexus 4, at least). In addition to coming with the latest Android version out of the box, the phone will get updates as soon as the Nexus devices do, and the bootloader will be unlockable as in the Nexus line. Another bit of good news is that the device will also support AT&T bands (the rumors from late Tuesday night only included information about T-Mobile bands) and will support LTE on both AT&T and T-Mobile. No word was given about any type of CDMA compatibility, so it looks like the bouncer kept Verizon and Sprint out of the Google Exper...

Google announces G+ recommendations for mobile sites

Google just keeps finding new ways to make its G+ platform work for you (not to mention that it keeps releasing significant announcements just before I/O). Earlier Monday we learned that Google will combine your cloud storage for Gmail, Drive and Google+ photos into 15GB shared between the apps, and later we learned that Google will bring content recommendations to your mobile site powered by its popular social network platform. If you're a bit unsure of how this works (as I was), you might find the desktop equivalent enlightening (pictured below). When you hover your mouse pointer over a news article's G+ button on your desktop browser, a list of recommended articles from the site you're on will appear to the right of the button, based on other articles that were shared and/or "+1'ed" by readers with Google+ profiles, and on search authorship . With its latest update to Google+, the development team has carried this functionality over to mobile-optimized s...

CyanogenMod nightlies come to the international HTC One

Owners of the international, carrier-unlocked version of the HTC One certainly didn't have to wait long to get their Cid on. CyanogenMod Developer codeworkx has already brought official nightly support to the device, which has only been in the market for about two weeks. Of course, this means all the hardware features are working - RIL (Radio Interface Layer, which gives you mobile data), Bluetooth, WiFi, audio and camera, just to name a few.Once the buildbot is finished posting the build for the M7 (the HTC One), you'll find the ROM download at get.cm . If you are coming from a Sense-based ROM (or just coming from stock), you'll need to remember to flash the March 1, 2013 version of the Google Apps (gapps) package from Goo.im when you flash the ROM in recovery.Since the chipsets for the HTC One and the Butterfly/J Butterfly/Droid DNA series, some of the device drivers from codeworkx's build could be ported in order to fix remaining issues with these phones as well...

Google Plus Hangouts on Air receives a much-needed update

Do you like to watch RootzLive but get frustrated by having to refresh your page to see if the show has started? Did you miss something that was said and wish you could rewind to see it? Would you like to be able to watch the show in its entirety on YouTube immediately after the show is over? From this day forward, you will be able to do all these things thanks to an update Google just announced to its Hangouts On Air feature in Google Plus. The only drawback is that the person setting up the hangout (b16 in the case of RootzLive) might experience a slight delay waiting for the "start broadcasting" button to be enabled, but from a viewer's standpoint, I'd say the update is much needed. In addition to the features I already mentioned, those of you who watch these hangouts on your mobile devices will experience greater video quality. Tuesday's update allows you to do the following:Rewind live broadcasts. Regardless when you start watching, you can always go back...

Steve Kondik once again took to Google+ to announce that CyanogenMod nightlies are coming for the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S IV. [s]At the time of this writing, the nightlies have not yet been posted on CyanogenMod's site . UPDATE: Official nightlies are now available for the T-Mobile variant (jfltetmo) and the Canadian variant (jfltecan) on get.cm .Kondik also mentioned that the nightlies still have "a few rough edges" but should be suitable for use as a daily driver. Interestingly, he said that Android's "hover events" should be supported, which means that you can control your phone without even touching the screen. "Hover events" appears to correspond to "Air View" on the stock TouchWiz ROM as shown in this "how-to" video: http://youtu.be/ASpXPCvhL6w The code on CyanogenMod's github is also complete, if you're interested in building for yourself and/or cherry-picking.

Given Google's reputation for innovation, its annual I/O conference should have some major new secrets that will be unveiled during the event. Not all innovations are being kept under wraps until I/O, however. For example, the Gmail team recently announced a new feature on its blog: users can now add event information within an email message to Google Calendar without having to leave the app.Gmail now recognizes dates and times within your email, and marks them with a dotted line. You can preview the information as an event with a simple click. It displays the time, date and an event title, and what I really enjoy is how it conveniently shows you your current calendar events to prevent over scheduling. Additionally, the new Calendar entry will include a link back to the originating email.I use Gmail to communicate about both business and personal events, as I am sure many of you do. Before this new feature, Gmail had a "Create Event" function, but in my experience it nev...

As is often the case with Samsung devices, those based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 have a root tool available prior to release (except for AT&T customers, who may already have their devices). Dan Rosenberg, the @djrbliss who unlocked Motorola's Snapdragon S4-based RAZR series and Atrix HD , has added to his notoriety by rooting the U.S. versions (and various other versions around the world powered by the Snapdragon 600) of the Galaxy S IV.While this is certainly welcome news, it should be noted that no custom recoveries are available for the device yet, and most models don't have a stock firmware package to flash via Odin. For these reasons, we recommend you proceed with extreme caution (also, neither djrbliss, XDA, RootzWiki, nor myself can be held responsible for any damage done to your device. If you want to go ahead and root your device despite our strong cautions (you might want to for the sake of various apps that require root), it is a relatively straightforwar...

Google Drive gets more social

Google announced some interesting features that will be added to its Google Drive service Thursday, making it more amenable to collaboration and, dare I say, even social interaction. Two features in particular seem to stand out: when you collaborate on a shared document, you can see the avatars of the people you're viewing the document with (instead of just the names), and you can start a group chat with a single click. Why should you care if you can see avatars now instead of names? You might actually recognize images at a quick glance before names, especially if you know (and/or are sharing a document with) more than one Steve Smith. It happens more often than not that many of the people I interact with in the Android community have the same or similar names. Also, when you hover over one of the icons, it shows more details about that person and a button that instantly adds him or her to your Google Plus circles without having to leave Drive.http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-DXAKxMg2fo...

AOKP, the second-most popular AOSP-based ROM after CyanogenMod, has released its first Android 4.2-based milestone, while also achieving an important milestone: one million downloads. Personally, I've used AOKP since at least Ice Cream Sandwich build 17 back in January 2012 on my Galaxy Nexus (I now use AOKP primarily on my Nexus 7), so I remember its small beginnings. The growth has come as a surprise not only to me, but also to the team members I've talked to, including team leader Roman Birg.Back when I was running those early Ice Cream Sandwich builds, my favorite features included naming my own carrier (believe it or not, that feature was a rarity back then ), the notification toggles and lockscreen options. Obviously, the feature list has grown exponentially along with the size of AOKP's userbase. Some of the newer features include navigation ring shortcuts (in addition to the default Google Now), widgets that can be included in the navigation bar, full-screen mode...

LinkedIn Purchases Pulse News

Social network client for professionals, LinkedIn announced on Thursday via a blog post its purchase of news aggregator Pulse. The move is designed to provide the network with capacity to publish content and provide an in-house means for users to share newsworthy items. The transaction is believed to come in at around $90 million (US). Pulse, a bay area startup became a popular cross platform news reader providing content to mobile minded readers. This once class project began in 2010 by Ankit Gupta and Akshay Kothar. Since it's inception, Pulse has been downloaded millions of times and has received accolades from many tech pundits and is even one of my favorite readers. The immediate question will be how LinkedIn will utilize the service. In the post from the LinkedIn blog, they do state, "Pulse will continue to deliver the news you care about and will remain the great experience you count on everyday." Change will inevitably come to the platform to make it a fu...

Today Facebook held its Android press conference for what many expected to be the reveal of an official Facebook phone built by HTC. The conference brought truth to the rumors, unveiling the HTC First, as well as the Facebook Home custom launcher, a social home screen for select Android devices.Facebook was quick to point out that it has no intent to fork Android - it is not going to go the route of Amazon and have its own Android revision that doesn't use the Google Play store. Instead the company will be releasing Facebook Home on April 12th for the HTC One X, and soon the HTC One, as well as the Samsung Galaxy S III, Galaxy S IV and Galaxy Note II.Once you install the launcher it will ask if you want to use the standard launcher or Facebook Home. When you select Home as your default launcher your home screen becomes an extension of Facebook. Turning on your screen will show “important” Facebook updates and Facebook messages, your Facebook picture is at the bottom of the scree...

After much internal debate, it has been decided that the pink unicorn has outlived its days and the time has come to appoint a new mascot for the popular aftermarket ROM. Taking over as the AOKP mascot is Gaius, lead developer Roman Birg's cat. Flaunting more of a "I see what you did there" look than an "I'm about to gore my horn through your guts" look, Gaius was deemed a more appropriate mascot for users who were uncomfortable with the iconic pink unicorn. For some, this is a sad day heralding the end of an era for the venerable pink unicorn. For others, perhaps those who wanted a more "masculine" mascot, this is the exciting dawn of a new era. Still others, however, think a cat is hardly a masculine mascot and would rather see a rhinoceros. Here is what some had to say:I can't stand this new mascot. There was nothing wrong with the pink unicorn. Those who thought it wasn't manly enough need to get a life. Awwww! This new mascot is such a...

If you shop regularly with Amazon, then you might have signed up as an Amazon Prime member. With Amazon Prime, you get two-day delivery, no minimum order size, unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows, and a free Kindle book a month to borrow, which makes it arguably worth the $79 annual price. With thousands and thousands of different products you can order, you could theoretically cut your physical shopping down to almost zero. Google hopes to one-up Amazon by delivering the goods on the same day you order them.Google, apparently hoping to present a viable alternative to Amazon's service, has now entered the shopping/shipping arena. Google plans to offer unlimited same-day delivery, and is currently piloting this new service in the San Francisco area and looking for testers. It works just like any online shopping company - you pick your item and then chose a shipping option. This is where it gets interesting - Google allows you to chose a time of you...

T-Mobile has officially announced its launch date for Samsung's new Galaxy S IV, committing to having the phone available by May 1st for $99 down, making it the first U.S. carrier to announce a release date. The announcement comes with one caveat though: the S IV will apparently be carrier locked until it's fully paid off, no doubt due to the elimination of its service contracts.

Although contracts are out the door, T-Mobile lets you pay your device in payments. The device will sell at a $99 "down payment", giving you a monthly installment of $20 until it's paid off.

The S IV will also take advantage of T-Mobile's new LTE network, which launched in seven cities today. Those cities are Baltimore, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Phoenix, San Jose, CA., and Washington D.C..

Knowing that the Galaxy S IV on T-Mobile will support its emerging LTE network, will you be picking up a Galaxy S IV?

For those ready to pre order the S4 on its network, that subsidized cost will be $249.99 with a two year contract. No word yet about storage options or shipping dates. In the blog post, AT&T states, "Continuing our legacy as the first carrier to launch Samsung’s Galaxy series, we are excited to announce AT&T customers will be able to begin pre-ordering the Galaxy S4 beginning April 16 for $249.99 with a two-year commitment". We already know that T-Mobile customers will be able to purchase the Galaxy S 4 for $99.00 up front and $20.00 monthly for 24 months (plus, T-Mobile was actually the first carrier to commit to a definite shipping date).

Google CEO Larry Page just announced today that Andy Rubin, one of the founders of the Android operating system, will be stepping down from his post atop the juggernaut OS and turning the reins over to ChromeOS and Apps executive Sundar Pichai. According to Page's announcement, Rubin will continue to work at Google in a presently undefined capacity, but this could spell major changes to come for Android, possibly even a merger with ChromeOS.Sundar Pichai will continue to lead development for ChromeOS and its related apps in addition to taking over the reins of Android from Rubin, which makes me think that Android might be folded into ChromeOS (or the other way around ). Despite Mozilla's entry into the mobile space with FireFox OS, the demand for native apps and a full-featured operating system won't be decreasing anytime soon.

HTC One fans who value their independence from U.S. carriers and their bootloader and SIM locking will soon be able to get their fix with the HTC One Developer edition, announced yesterday by HTC, for the reasonable price of $649. While it's currently unclear which carriers will prevent the regular HTC One from being unlocked at HTCDev.com, users who buy the Developer Edition won't have to concern themselves with that. The specs for the Developer Edition are identical to those of the regular HTC One (except the unlocked SIM and bootloader, of course), though it will come with 64GB of storage (as opposed to the 32GB and 64GB options available for the regular device). With that in mind, the $649 price tag looks much more reasonable. It doesn't support the CDMA technology of Sprint and Verizon, though it does support their LTE bands. The complete list of supported frequencies follows:HSPA/WCDMA: 850/1900/2100 MHzGSM/GPRS/EDGE: 850/900/1800/1900 MHzLTE: 700/850/AWS...

Will Samsung rule the Galaxy again?

Well, the big Unpacked event has come and gone, and now we're left to assimilate the flood of information unleashed at Radio City Music Hall. No more rumors, no more leaks, just facts. Samsung announced its 2013 flagship superphone in the Galaxy S IV to much fanfare and contrived acting by subpar performers (except the boy from the Unpacked teasers, Jeremy). What does the new device bring, and will it dominate the competition like its predecessor? The Galaxy S IV was unpacked to reveal the following hardware specs (which I then repacked with my usual witty commentary :U.S. version: 1.9 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 600. This will no doubt a huge disappointment for Samsung fans Stateside, but the Snapdragon 600 will likely be more development-friendly than the Exynos Octa, especially since the phone will share certain code libraries with other phones worldwide that also have the Snapdragon 600.

If you use the stock Android browser, you might want to make a switch unless you like potentially sharing your password with the world. The vulnerability was discovered by RootzWiki developer JBirdVegas - the stock browser, like other apps before it in Android's sordid security history , stores your saved website passwords as plain text. This means rooted users are especially vulnerable to this security hole.If Google wants Android to be taken seriously as an option for enterprise/corporate use, it will certainly have to come up with a comprehensive solution to this long-standing issue. Obviously, patching a hole in a single app isn't going to be sufficient - some kind of policy will have to be implemented that forces all apps that come preinstalled or come from the Play Store to encrypt their credential storage. There are already options available such as device encryption, but it is unclear whether that fully addresses the vulnerability, especially when the device is u...

Coming to America: the Sony Xperia ZL ($760 unlocked?)
