Tegra 3: Roadmap

At the upcoming MWC , NVIDIA looks to build upon Tegra 2’s success by debuting their new quad-core technology, Tegra 3. Their past year’s sales reached $360 million dollars and NVIDIA is looking to build upon that by increasing sales over Tegra 2 by 50% with their Tegra 3 chipset. NVIDIA plans to have Tegra 3 cores running inside many “superphones” and tablets during the 2012 fiscal year. This launch is also positioned to take advantage of Windows 8 on the horizon. Windows 8 figures to be a big part of their plans as far as deployment going forward. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has been quoted to say that Android tablets headline his expectations for sale of Tegra 3 but Windows 8 is going to play a large role as well. We have now three generations of Android operating systems and devices behind us. We have 10s and 10s of smartphones and 10s of tablets. We have engagements with nearly every single Tier 1 OEM in the world on the mobile side, as well as on the computing side. And so...

Jellybean Rumored to Include Android@Home

We have barely had our first tastes of Ice Cream Sandwich and already we're begging for more sweets. The Jellybean (aka Android 5.0) mill has been churning hard this week and the latest tidbit from SlashGear is a doozy. The site has strong reason to believe that the next iteneration of Android is going to include some incredible home automation features in the form of Android@Home...Android@Home is coming, there is no denying that. The system was first announced at Google I/O last year but has yet to make a real appearance anywhere since. This home automation system allows users to control various appliances and lights around the home using your Android device. This is truly a geeks dream, but why do many expect to see this system integrated in Jellybean? Let's break it down.http://rootzwiki.com/uploads/monthly_02_2012/ccs-24163-0-08521700-1329932631.pngWith the recent announcement of desktop mode inside the next version of Android, it's clear that this version is aimin...

Google to Introduce Android-Powered HUD Glasses by Year's End

As true gadget geeks, we're all waiting for the day that we can take the plunge and start mixing the virtual and physical worlds into one. Advances in virtual reality and augmented reality are beginning to make that possible, and the day that we begin combining those two worlds is fast approaching, if Google has anything to say about it. Gimmicky glasses with built-in cameras or mirrors are nothing new. That kind of thing has been around for some time. Now, though, Google is looking to bring terminator-style vision to a pair of Google Goggles in the truest sense of the word. A report in the New York Times is adding credibility and further information to rumors that began circulating a short time ago , about some high-tech headwear out of Google's secret labs. Citing internal sources "familiar" with the project, the Times' reports that Google will begin selling their HUD glasses at the end of the year with variations ranging from $250-$600. Naturally,...

TSF Shell Launching on Leap Day

Home replacement apps are a dime a dozen these days. Most tend to replicate and then attempt to slightly improve on their predecessors, causing many custom launchers to behave quite similar to each other minus a transition effect or two. TSF Shell Pro 3D is not your typical home replacement application however. This launcher brings some incredibly unique features to the table, many of them are sure to make the Android fanboy inside you go ballistic. Even better news, TSF has announced that they will finally be gracing a device near you starting February 29th.Using a custom launcher is one of the quickest and easiest ways to change the UI experience on your phone and TSF's (The Special Forces) latest project definitely switches things up. Some of the unique features in TSF Shell include a Lasso Tool, Quick Screen Switcher, 3D Widgets, Folder Boxes, Quick Launch Bar, TSF Store and more. Check out the super short (see: 9 freaking minutes) trailer below to check out these great feat...

Android 4.0 OTA for SGSII Beginning March 1

Samsung Galaxy S2 (GT-I9100) owners will be excited to see their device software get upgraded from Android 2.3.X Gingerbread to 4.0.X! This will be one of the first phones to be getting the OTA update to Android's most current OS. Eldar Murtazin , tech insider, has confirmed this update starting on the first of March depending on the country and carrier. Android 4 aka ics for sgs2 is going to be officially offered by March 1(depends from county/operator). The best news is that Samsung has had plenty of time to add their custom UI overlay, TouchWiz to the Ice Cream Sandwich goodness. TouchWiz + Android 4.0 sounds lame in theory due to all the “extra features”, but I doubt there’s much they can do to take away the sheer awesome that is ICS. On December 20th last year, Samsung had announced that the Galaxy Note, Galaxy Tab, and SGS2 devices would get the ICS update in near future, while not specifying an exact date. Another update from Samsung had stated that the SGS2 and Gala...

ASUS Releases Transformer Prime Bootloader Unlock Tool

Shortly after the release of the Transformer Prime, ASUS said in a statement that they would be releasing an unlock tool for the device's bootloader. They've made good on that promise today, and the unlock tool is now available! The tool is up for download on the official ASUS site , and can be found under the "utilities" heading. Once you get the file downloaded, it's pretty easy to use. It's an APK file, so download directly to your tablet, or copy it over. Run the app, let it work, and you have now unlocked the bootloader! However, by choosing to install you're signing the waiver absolving ASUS of any responsibility for damage you might cause by doing the root thing and using custom software. This means that the Prime is now a prime playground for developers to start crafting custom ROMs, kernels, and recoveries! If you're ready to start getting your hands dirty, you can get in on the action over at our Transformer Prime developer forum...

NVIDIA has used "The way it's meant to be played" for their marketing tagline for several years. With their recent introduction of the Icera modem family and the popularity of their Tegra series of SoC solutions, their motto could shift to "The way it's meant to be called." The Icera platform currently consists of three different modem variants and will be debuting on ZTE's Mimosa X, giving that phone the distinction of being the first phone available powered completely by NVIDIA.The Icera modem platform currently consists of three solutions, each meant for a different market segment.
Panasonic Tosses Their Hat into the Android Ring

Panasonic is pretty much a household name when it comes to electronics, but we don't really tend to think of them when it comes to mobile phones. Well it seems that might change since they're supposed to announce a few new devices at MWC. While details are slightly scarce at the moment, we can definitely tell you everything we know. And probably some things we don't. Eluga. It doesn't exactly just roll off the tongue, but it's what Panasonic has decided to call one of their flagship Android devices. This guy has a dual core OMAP 4430 clocking at 1 GHz per core, 1 GB ram, and 8 GB of built in storage; all complemented by a 4.3" QHD OLED screen and an 8 MP camera. While those specs may seem pretty normal for phones nowadays, there is one thing that is kind of shocking. The Eluga is waterproof. Yeah, waterproof. According to the specs, this thing is IP 57 certified, which means it can be in meter deep water for up to 30 minutes without any issues. So if you'...

Canonical Brings Full-Fledged Ubuntu to Android

Android and Linux is really a marriage that should have come about a long time ago. Android runs a Linux kernel, so the transition between the two should be pretty seamless. And now it is. No more will you need virtual machines or dual-boot systems. Canonical is introducing a parallel system that allows Android for mobile, and Ubuntu for the desktop, all in one device. With some extras.Canonical's announcement today details their introduction of Ubuntu to Android phones with at least 2 cores. Sorry, older devices. Clearly aimed at knocking Motorola's webtop software out of the game, the parallel experience of Android and Ubuntu is accomplished via a phone dock. That means that you won't be running Ubuntu while you're phone is undocked, unfortunately, but you will have your entire Ubuntu system available to plug and play with any monitor and your smartphone dock. Simply connect the device to a monitor and keyboard, or lapdock, and you have full control over the Ubunt...

Android Jellybean to Provide Native Lapdock Capability

In our earlier report of some features in Android 5.0 Jellybean, which were leaked by DigiTimes, we told you about the possibility of a dual boot Windows 8/Android system. DigiTimes' sources, though, may have been confused regarding a new native ability in Jellybean that they mistook for a dual boot system. What may actually be happening with the next version of Android has a bit to do with Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility. The Moto acquisition was recently approved by both the US and EU regulatory bodies, but still has to gain approval in Israel and China. But Google's pretty confident that they can get that approval and complete the acquisition.Motorola's lapdock system, which has been used in the Atrix and the Droid lines, is theorized to be the dual boot feature that was talked about in the DigiTimes report. This is based on analysis from Mobile-Review's Eldar Murtazin , a very plugged-in industry analyst. Murtazin's theory actually sounds far mo...

The latest and greatest from the CyanogenMod Team is coming to an Android device near you very soon. Many of us are already running early versions and couldn't be happier! But the releases we've seen thus far are all running the Galaxy Nexus boot animation. Not anymore, though. The new CM boot animation has now been unveiled to the public. The new animation mixes a little bit of the classic with a big gooey smattering of the future, to bring you an awesome boot screen that will have you rebooting your device again and again, and then again to show your friends. Who will likely look at you with fear in their eyes for your sanity. But what do they know? Check out the video and get your SD cards ready for downloading. We can't wait for the next build to include this one.
Sony Google TV System Gets Rooted

If you're the owner of a Sony Google TV, model number NSZ-GT1 or any of the current built-in models, and you've been waiting around for a way to root your GTV with a software-only solution, then today is your day. The GTV Hacker blog has devised a method by which you can gain root, no hardware hacking or soldering required.GTV in its most current form is far more capable a service than when it first launched back in 2010. Honeycomb has arrived, the Android Market is live, but there are still some limitations on the device. Most notably, the content blackout restrictions from some providers (like Hulu) are a constant aggravation for GTV owners. Now, though, your rooted GTV can get around those restrictions with the ability to run unsigned kernels, which remove content restrictions, as well as some other benefits listed below.Modified flash plugin with random per box flash string for Content Provider Bypass.Crippled update feature to prevent box from receiving automatic updat...

If you're one of the many unlucky people who's had to resort to the HTC unlock method for rooting your phone, then you surely know the woes of being unable to flash kernels from recovery. Presently, we've had options such as FlashImageGUI or booting recovery from a PC, but that's all about to change. Thanks to the geniuses over at Team Win (namely Dees_Troy , s0up , and Shift ), your flashing experiences are about to get a lot easier. The issue stems from the fact that if you boot into recovery normally, the phone won't let you flash to the boot partition. Now, rather than horribly butcher the explanation for how this works, we're just gonna let you hear the stuff straight from one of the developers of the method, Dees_Troy: So, on a HTC device (and most Android devices) you have a boot partition for the kernel and a recovery partition for a recovery. The 2 partitions are more akin to dual booting operating systems on a laptop. The difference between recove...

New ICS Easter Eggs: This Time in Chrome

While the ICS easter egg in the Calendar widget was a little funny and a little clever, you can feel free to file at least one of the following Chrome easter eggs in the "holy crap that is a lot of work for kind of not much of a reward" pile. That's right, there are two surprises to be found in Google's beta Chrome browser. Feel free to argue their usefulness in the comments section. The first, and most simple little piece of graphical fun is in the "show all tabs" section of the browser. If you have at least one tab open, click on the button that shows all open tabs. Swipe up five times (go ahead and try now if you like). The tabs will all flip around showing the chrome logo on the back like a set of Google Chrome-branded playing cards. Fun right? The second easter egg is also related to tabs, but is a little more labor intensive. Open up 100 tabs, yes, 100 (btw, it will take you about 3-4 minutes to do so). Once you reach the 100 ta...

The debate of the infamous manufacturer skins continues to be one of the hottest topics in Android land these days. Many users prefer Google's stock Android to any of the UI skins but there are occasionally really great features to be found in some of the other versions. Of course, HTC has Sense, Samsung has Touchwiz, and Motorola has... whatever the hell they are calling their UI now after "Blur" was retired. It seems that one lucky user out there in the root community has gotten their hands on a juicy looking Moto UI + Android 4.0 leak for the Droid Razr that reveals for the first time what we might expect from Motorola's take on the latest version of Android.Found over on DroidRzr , user Dragon 974 posted these delicious looking screenshots of the Moto/ICS mash-up in action.
ZTE to Unveil Two New Android Phones at MWC

Stateside, ZTE may not be one of the most known Android developers. None of the big four have a single ZTE device, so unless you're on prepaid, you might not even know they exist. Nonetheless, this developer from China is unveiling a higher end and a midrange device at MWC. The big question is whether or not we'll see these phones in the US. The N910 is a midranged device, sporting 4.3 inch HDPI screen, a dual core 1.2 GHz processor, and a 5 megapixel camera. Nothing too fancy, but it was the fact that this is a CDMA & LTE capable device that caught our eye. Since a good amount of prepaid carriers are CDMA, and since MetroPCS now has an LTE service; there's a pretty good chance we'll see this guy in the US. The PF200, on the other hand, is a higher end device; boasting a 4.3 inch QHD screen, a dual core 1.5 GHz processor, and an 8 megapixel camera. Unlike the N910, this is a GSM device with support for LTE and NFC. Since T-Mobile has expressed no interest in an L...

Allowing you to watch 22 of Sky’s live channels, the application currently only works on a handful of Samsung and HTC devices, none of which can run Ice Cream Sandwich or, more importantly, be rooted.Clearly trying to make an impact on the most popular devices, Sky only supports the top selling Android devices (none of them tablets):http://rootzwiki.com/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_rel_module=ccs&attach_id=18394 HTC DesireHTC Desire SHTC Desire HDHTC IncredibleHTC SensationSamsung Galaxy SSamsung Galaxy S IIWhile we’re sure that we’ll be seeing more device support further down the road and eventually Ice Cream Sandwich support, it seems unlikely that Sky will repent on the decision not to support rooted devices.

Fujitsu has been serving the Asian phone sector for several years and developed a foothold in that market in both Android and Windows Phone sales. Reports are now surfacing that Fujitsu will announce its intentions to bring its line of mobile phones to Europe at the Mobile World Congress and potentially begin sales in the North American market in late 2012 or 2013. With HTC, Samsung, and Motorola already fiercely battling for the spot for several years, will Fujitsu be able to penetrate an already crowded market?Heading into the fray on two new continents for Fujitsu's handset wing, there are some major decisions for the company to make. Fujitsu has successful Android and Windows Phone products in Asia and is highly popular in the Japanese market. Android currently commands 50% of the smartphone OS share in American markets, but Windows Phone has a paltry 1.9%.
