Vital Protip: You can now text 911 for emergencies

Now this isn’t specifically an Android or root tip, this is just a general PSA that may help someone out in an emergency. This will help those who are in trouble and can’t pick up the phone or it simply may not be safe to talk at the moment. The Text-to-911 service just went live on Thursday.

Text-to-911 is as simple process as it sounds, you can text a message to 911 officials in case of an emergency. This wil prompt a (hopefully) quick conversation between you and an emergency professional to provide help in the best way they can. The 4 major U.S. carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile) are all backing this service as well.

Unfortunately the service is not immediately available in all states and cities, but companies are working to have the service roll out nationwide as soon as possible. If you are able to use the service, and feel the need to use it, be sure to add your location and emergency situation as soon as possible, this can save precious time during the conversation – especially since officials won’t be able to lock in your location as they can with phone calls.

Be sure to keep this information in mind just in case you or someone you know is ever in a situation that requires the service, but NEVER joke around or waste people’s time with this. Hopefully this new service will aid in protecting more of the public in times of crisis or danger.
