Instapaper Announces Instapaper Premium

In a move to become more of a premier content house, Instapaper announced their new Instapaper Premium program. They also announced that the Instapaper application will now become a free download in the Google and iOS app stores. Instapaper Premium of course comes at a cost though. For $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year, users can have their full suite of features.

Here is a list of improvements that come with a subscription to Instapaper Premium:

  • Full-text search for all articles in your account
  • Unlimited highlights
  • Text-to-Speech playlists on mobile
  • API integration for third-party apps
  • An ad free Instapaper website
  • “Send to Kindle” using a bookmarklet or our mobile apps
  • Support Instapaper’s continued operation

For those that purchased Instapaper, an email went out Wednesday evening describing the benefits of the upgrade, making the application free, and allowing those who paid for the app to get a free month of Instapaper Pro to try out all of the features. In that email they state,

As of today, the Instapaper app will be downloadable for free through all channels, with Instapaper Premium (formerly the subscription package) costing $2.99/month or $29.99/year. Since most Instapaper users purchased the iOS and/or Android app, we’d like to thank you for that past support by giving you a free month of Instapaper Premium.

For those who take full advantage of services such as Pocket, Readability, and others, they state that their cost comes at a savings over the others. They boast a 40% savings over the year and 33% savings on the monthly fee. All of this will bring the full set of features and keep their lights on according to their email.

All in all for those who use this as a platform to bring in crazy amounts of content, this is not a bad deal for a premium service year over year. Non power users will also be able to now enjoy the basic features for free now that the three dollar application cost has been removed. Is it something you’ll check out? There’s a free month for users to find out. Let us know if you take the plunge.

Instapaper will now be free to download in the Google Play Store (with in app purchasing).
