Jeff McIntire is an avid Android enthusiast whose first exposure to the world of Android, rooting, and customizing came in 2010 through the Samsung Captivate. Later that same year, he was introduced to the Verizon community through the Fascinate, which carried him from Eclair all the way to Ice Cream Sandwich. Having tried various ROMs, kernels and themes based on TouchWiz, he took the plunge into AOSP in May 2011 and never looked back. He now happily taps away at his Galaxy Nexus, always looking out for the latest and greatest, and helping others along the way.

Verizon may be getting a Deluxe treat from HTC

Rumors and announcements abound during the Fall smartphone/tablet season, including Nexus rumors, the quad-core Exynos 4412-powered Galaxy Note 2 (U.S. versions also have the Exynos 4412 for a change), and a new generation of devices powered by the quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro. Officially announced Snapdragon S4 Pro phones include the Xiaomi Mi-Two MIUI phone, the LG Optimus G, the Asus Padfone 2, and the HTC J Butterfly exclusive to Japan. Now, you can (probably) add the 5-inch HTC DLX, which brings a 1920x1080 SLCD3 display (like that in the J Butterfly) to the Snapdragon S4 Pro party.

The rumored specs are very similar to those of HTC J Butterfly, as follows:
  • 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor
  • 1.5 GB - 2 GB of RAM, depending on which source you consult (Android and Me cites "a renowned HTC tipster" (yeah, we heard that before, but this time the source is openly identified as @Football4PDA on Twitter, and he's cited by other media outlets as well)
  • 5-inch 1920x1080 SLCD3 display (you won't notice much of a difference in photos or videos, but text, UI and vector graphics, and maps will all look clearer - more on SLCD3 here)
  • 8 or 12 MP camera, depending on which source you consult (HTC is known for quality cameras with excellent picture quality, so either megapixel count should produce sharp photos)
  • 2500 mAh non-removable battery (ugh - 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S4 Pro + 2,073,600 pixels pushed by high-powered Adreno 320 GPU + non-removable battery with only 2500 mAh = don't leave your charger at home because your charge won't last long)
  • 16 GB of storage (no word yet on whether this phone will come in 32 or 64 GB versions, or whether there will be a MicroSD expansion slot)
  • Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean (let's hope this one turns out to be true, as Verizon has a history of launching phones with outdated versions of Android and taking their sweet time with updates)
As with any rumor regarding an upcoming device, you should take it with the usual grain of salt. Still, there is mounting evidence to indicate that Verizon will actually get a 5-inch HTC phablet and call it the DLX:
  • As mentioned above, @Football4PDA, who claims to be an HTC developer, tweeted most of the specs listed here, and is evidently respected by multiple media outlets
  • An "HTC6435LVW" that Blog of Mobile claims is a "Droid Incredible X" with Verizon LTE bands (including "E-UTRA FDD Band 13: Category : 3" was outed on a certification forum (apparently with a limited window of exclusivity, as the certification forum also lists GSM bands - could the GSM bands also indicate a Nexus 5?)
  • Android Central has its own source, which leaked Mr. Blurrycam photos of the "DLX" (buzzkill alert: it will have physical home, back and recents buttons, unlike the Galaxy Nexus, so if you want a custom navbar, be prepared to give up some screen real estate and have nav button clutter at the bottom of your phone)
Now, I present the blurrycam photos from Android Central:
