In December, Google is expected to sell 1 Million Nexus 7 tablets. There will be many new and current Nexus 7 owners looking to protect their shiny new tablet. Now you can go with a basic TPU case, a slipcover, or you can heavy duty. Poetic has a nice looking portfolio of Nexus 7 cases that include many flip covers variants, a snap-on case, and the heavy duty. The Poetic Revolution offers a housing for your Nexus that protects roughly 98% of your device at all times.
This Revolution case is a two part case with the first being a hard shell housing. Two pieces snap together to protect the entire tablet. It has a built-in screen guard for total protection. The hard shell casing is then enclosed by a large piece of silicon that snaps into place with the built in latches into the hard shell. Installation of the case is easy to put on but not so much to take off. Unlatching the hard shell takes practice and the mindset that you will not break it. The silicon has a texture to it that works great as grip. The design of the Revolution case is very similar to the Otterbox Defender series for those looking for a comparison.
Once the case is on my worries about damaging my Nexus 7 went out the window. I am not saying it is impossible to damage your Nexus 7 while using this case but if you do then it must have been an extreme event to make it happen. Even the screen in protected with the built-in screen guard. This screen guard is water resistant. Now I do not recommend pouring a cup of water on the screen but it worked well against raindrops & small spills. The responsiveness to touch allowed by the screen guard is not the greatest, but it is functional. It works but it struggles with multi-touch. My experience with pinch to zoom has been irritating since it takes me a bit longer to perform curtain takes. The screen guard also makes the screen appear grainy. It is noticeable close up (6-8 inches) then clears up a bit the further you more it out.
The back of the case is very interesting. Poetic has added great features to a rugged case by implementing two flip out stands so you can stand up your Nexus 7 in either portrait or landscape. The stand is simple and can hold the Nexus 7 without a problem. I initially thought the stand to be a bit flimsy but after my testing, it withstood a reasonable amount of abuse. I would still be careful to prevent a break by force on awkward position. The case also has a generic loophole. It is simple and sits flush against the back. It is said to be used to attach your Nexus 7 to your clothing or backpack with a carabiner. I do not see the practical use of me using this loop hole but its there if you need it.
When I stated that the is 98% of the Nexus 7 is protected at all times, I wasn't kidding. The only part that is open after the case is in place is the speaker. Everything else has at least one layer of protection. Even the speaker is protected by the thickness of the case. The silicone layer of the case covers all the ports & physical buttons. There are indentations to locate the volume rocker and power buttons but it will take practice to learn where they are with the case on. A flap of silicone covers the ports so you will have to open the flap every time you want to plug in your charger or headphones.
This case is great for those with kids, tough working conditions, and for travelers. If you are in need of protection for your Nexus 7, this case can provide it for you. If you care deeply for your screen resolution this is not for you unless you use it occasionally. Using it occasionally does not justify the $29.95 (Amazon) price tag (Original Price: $49.95 through Poetic), but if you frequently find yourself in less-than-ideal situations then you should definitely give this case a second look.
