Mike was instantly drawn to Android with the release of the G1 and HTC Magic which became his first phone. Drawn by the allure of open source and community, he quickly learned about rooting his device and applications to improve its performance Since then he has only owned Nexus devices for their ease of root level access and the ability to run the latest versions of Android via ROM or stock. He has owned a Nexus One, a Nexus S 4G, a Nook Color, and a Nexus 7.

He started writing for Android in 2011 at Android Activist and started writing for Rootzwiki News in April 2012. He was married in October, 2012 and lives in Richmond, Virginia.

ICS Officially Comes to the HTC Thunderbolt. No, Really.

I had my doubts when I heard reports circulating that Verizon has finally pushed the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the HTC Thunderbolt. Surely someone is pulling our legs, again. I was able to hold this magnificent device when it was released in 2011 in my hands and almost purchased one for myself. Surely Verizon would keep this flagship phone and overall fairly nice device updated. I was wrong and glad I did not make that purchase, but it does appear an update is on the horizon for the Thunderbolt. For real!

I did find a little bit of a chuckle when reading the announcement on Verizon's support page. It states, "When you rely on Verizon Wireless, you know you are getting the cutting-edge devices and technology needed to keep your business running at full speed". I am certain a large segment of current Thunderbolt owners are in enterprise, so the version of Android running on this device may not matter. For the rest of us, this has been quite the aggravating experience.

On top of the delay, to add slight insult to insult, the upgrade will move the Thunderbolt from Gingerbread (2.3) to Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.x). This so called cutting edge device will soon be running the previous version of Android. I would have to believe that this step, if it does not break the device for a majority of devices, will be a precursor for the Jelly Bean update.

When or if the Jelly Bean update does roll out, I hope my children are able to write that story for me. I'm sure the remainder of us holding this device have long since installed after market ROM's or have crushed their devices underfoot. The users that I've known over the years have long since given up on this phone.

Are there any Thunderbolt users in our audience? Are you excited for the update? Do you think Jelly Bean will ever run on this device? Share your thoughts or your best one liners in the comments.
