AT&T and Verizon Galaxy S4 Bootloader Bypassed with New Tool Called "Loki"

May 23 2013 10:45 PM | BearDroid in General News

A while back, we found out (to no one’s surprise) that Verizon was locking down the bootloader on the Samsung Galaxy S4, but we were surprised when we found out AT&T was also doing this. Thankfully, the development community has pulled through and found a way to work around this. Dan Rosenberg (djrbliss) had unlocked the bootloaders on the AT&T and Verizon variants already, but just Thursday he published an explanation of how the unlock works and a Git repository to aid developers.

Improvements to Gmail Search to include emails, Google Drive docs, and Calendar Events

May 23 2013 10:20 PM | androiduser2008 in General News

The new features for Gmail just keep coming. In this month alone the Gmail team has announced the ability to send money to users via email, merge your storage with that of Google+ and create calendar events from email information. Some companies would hold off and bring these features under one "revolutionary update" for maximum news coverage. Not Google, though - it releases them when they are ready and make a simple announcement through their respective product blogs, including Thursday's announcement of revamped search functionality in Gmail.

Google Chrome Receives "Richer Notifications"

May 23 2013 09:55 PM | androiduser2008 in General News

We have seen floating notifications before from many different services and programs. Back in January 2011, Google announced desktop notifications for email and chat messages. We still use this notification system today, but now Google is taking it a step further. The Google Chrome team took to its blog Thursday to announce it is bringing "richer notifications" to Google Chrome and the feature is already available through the beta channel.

No Need For S-Off, HTCDev Unlock Does The Job On HTC One

May 06 2013 09:15 PM | Kidromulous in General News

In the past HTCDev unlock has still left some hurdles for developers to overcome, and until S-Off (security-off) was achieved on those devices things like flashing custom kernels was a chore and required additional software like FlashimageGUI to get it done. According to well-known developer Koushik Dutta, who recently wrote a G+ post to clear up some misunderstandings about S-Off, this will not be a problem in the case of the HTC One.

Sprint Acquires Handmark and OneLouder Apps, promises they will continue as before

May 21 2013 07:25 PM | Kidromulous in General News

You may have heard of app developer OneLouder and may be familiar with some of the popular apps it has released, including Tweetcaster, Friendcaster, 1Weather, and Reddit client Baconreader. You might find it troubling, though, that on Monday Sprint announced its buyout of OneLouder's parent company Handmark. If you are indeed concerned about what this means for the future of your favorite apps, Sprint attempted to calm your fears by promising not to discontinue them.

Color me paranoid: test builds with HALO are now available for Paranoid Android users

May 05 2013 03:30 AM | androiduser2008 in General News

It was just recently that my colleague Marvin Ferrell analyzed the new Halo feature by the Paranoid Android Team as it was demonstrated on Oode's YouTube channel. It is said that Chat Heads, a feature in Facebook Home for Android, inspired Paranoid Android's latest innovation. It truly revolutionizes the way you check your notifications and work with multiple apps at once. The feature was said to be "coming soon,” but is now available for select devices, much sooner than I expected.

New APIs Added to Google Play Services

May 15 2013 08:25 PM | BearDroid in General News

The first thing on Google's agenda at today's I/O keynote was applications. They talked about how many people are now using Android and how many apps have been downloaded. The numbers were enormous. Over 900 million apps have been downloaded. That's amazing. But in normal Google fashion, they aren't done making things awesome.

Google's cross-platform messaging service finally arrives... as "Hangouts"

May 16 2013 01:10 AM | androiduser2008 in General News

The long-awaited cross-platform messaging service from Google has finally arrived, and it is called Hangouts (unfortunately for you "Babel" fans). Hopefully, the "Hangouts" name won't be confusing to you (editor's note: ironically, "Babel" is the ancient Hebrew word for "confusion"). Google Hangouts was already a widely-used feature on Google+ before this announcement, but now it encompasses more than simple video chats over the Google+ platform.

Developers Can Now Reply to All User Reviews

May 14 2013 06:30 PM | androiduser2008 in General News

The Google Play Team has been hard at work to provide a better experience in Google Play for both the user and the developer. We have seen updates to the Developer console as well as account tie-in with Google+ for app reviewers in order to mitigate the anonymous aspect when reviewing apps. Its main focus was to help improve the quality of reviews so they become more helpful to users & developers. Recently the Google Play Team has taken it a step further and has finally implemented the ability for developers to reply to users' reviews.

May 13 2013 11:55 PM | androiduser2008 in General News

In the past, storage space between Gmail and Drive (not to mention Google+ Photos) has been confusing and difficult to manage. In an effort to simplify your cloud storage, the Google Drive team took to its blog Monday to announce that storage between Google Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos will be combined, giving you 15GB in common storage. This comes as a welcome change to the counterintuitive storage alloctations of 10GB to Gmail and 5GB to Drive and Google+ Photos.

Kingston MobileLite Wireless Card Reader & External Battery

May 07 2013 06:35 PM | androiduser2008 in General News

Kingston made a successful debut in the mobile products market with its Wi-Drive, which allows you to wirelessly share files between multiple devices simultaneously. One limitation of the Wi-Drive was its internal storage - otherwise, it is a fantastic device. Recently, Kingston has made its second foray into the mobile products market with in the MobileLite Wireless card reader and external battery. Since its storage is dictated by the SD cards or flash drives you connect to it, your storage space is limited only by how many of these you have.

Google Play comes to Nook HD and HD+

May 03 2013 06:30 AM | androiduser2008 in General News

The last Nook tablet I owned was the Nook Color. As much as I liked that device, it was a pain having to root the device to get access to its full potential. When I first saw and held the Nook HD I was interested in learning more. However, Barnes & Noble's (B&N) commitment to a strict ecosystem was a major reason I never went back. However, in a stunning reversal, Barnes and Noble promised that it will soon be pushing out an update that will be bringing Google's Play Store to both the Nook HD & HD+.
