Woeful Outlook.com App Released For Android

There are still a few of us who unadmittingly still have use for their Hotmail or Outlook.com email accounts. Microsoft had previously released a Hotmail app, but now they have released their first attempt at an application to mirror their recent changes to Outlook web. Here are a list of features followed by a list of terrible complaints that I had with it after just a few minutes use:
  • Get email messages right away with push notifications
  • Sync with your calendar and device contacts
  • View and sync standard and custom folders, including sub-folders
  • Send, receive, and view photos and other attachments
  • Use with multiple Outlook.com accounts

I've tried to stay familiar with various ecosystems, including Microsoft. With their push into the tablet and phone space the past year, it's worth keeping an eye on all things competitive. While I like the push notifications for new emails, multiple account support and decent Exchange support/device syncing, this app looks to be a total dud. They actually did a decent job with Skydrive, but the Outlook app is clearly handled at a separate division.

The app feels like a blast from the past. Nowhere to be seen is this new flashy (don't call it) Metro UI that we've all gotten so accustomed to with Windows 8. The app itself feels like a regurgitation of the Hotmail application which is a steaming pile within itself. It appears a mid level manager at Microsoft was tasked with creating an Android application and put in the minimum amount of work possible for his work to be considered passable. My headers are crunched into the inbox and overall the app just looks awful.

As a result, the Outlook.com application is passable. Over time and with better resources, I'm certain MS will focus on making this a better looking application, but unless you really this separate application eating battery and memory, there's little reason to run it. Maybe from great shame in Redmond will come an application worthy of us in the Android community. This goes to show that we do not just crave functionality, we do actually appreciate some polish as well.

Do you disagree? Tell me the value of this application, if there is any.
