Pattrn - Adding Flavor To Android Backgrounds

Having customizable backgrounds is surely not a power feature of Android, but having the ability to constantly change my wallpaper was one of the features that lured me to Android years ago. I have used many wallpaper applications over that time, but a newer option in the Play Store has found it's way into my more regular rotation. Pattrn brings a nearly unique experience to my background selection schemes. Here is a list of major features:
  • Set wallpaper automatically every day/week with the patterns of your choice
  • Browse the latest and most popular patterns
  • Search patterns by keyword or color
  • Keep a list of your favorite patterns
  • Save patterns to your Android Gallery
  • View community stats and color palettes of each pattern
  • Share patterns with your friends
  • Use specific patterns as your Android wallpaper
  • Touch devices back-to-back to transfer patterns (Android Beam)

It is refreshing to have the option for Pattrn to change backgrounds on a regular basis using selected backgrounds. I do not use that feature myself, but the ability for the app to keep that wallpaper fresh with zero effort is a great feature. The ability to store and save favorites is not a new feature, but the developer does a good job of creating a nice interface around maintaining those selected few wallpapers. It's always fun to utilize Android Beam as well. I have on occasion wanted the background on my phone and tablet to be the same and with both devices enabled, it was simple and fun enough to do. The UI works well on all devices. It looks just as fluid on my Nexus 7 as it did on my phone.

The app has integration deep inside Android to store favorites in the Android gallery or come up as a background option when making a change. The ability to tap on a wallpaper and search by color is handy as well as their keyword search. Part of what makes these applications successful is community involvement and it seems from reviews and hallway discussions that this has become a recognizable option for many users.

There is one drawback to this application and that is from a good deal of the wallpapers themselves. A lot of them are entirely too noisy for me to use. They will bleed out any application texts, and many widgets become overpowered by their brightness. I am a fan of more subtle backgrounds, usually black or dark blue that provide little to no noise and those selections are far fewer within the Pattrn ecosystem. I often just use no background at all, and like applications that can get as close to that level of eye attention as possible.

I would dare say that many wallpapers which feature floral or other feminine patterns may be appealing to younger or female users. The few darker patterns that I have found have been favorites which have stayed on my phones days if not weeks at a time. I am one of those people that typically prefer to change my backgrounds daily, but with some of these wallpapers, I have been quite pleased. I believe that in the passage of time, some top creators will utilize this application and community to provide some quality backgrounds.

Lucas Rocha, British via Brazil developer for Firefox has created this application and has done some other good works. Do go and check them out as well as provide good constructive feedback in the Play Store. Your thoughts about Pattrn or other favorite background applications are welcome as well in our comments.
