Jeff McIntire is an avid Android enthusiast whose first exposure to the world of Android, rooting, and customizing came in 2010 through the Samsung Captivate. Later that same year, he was introduced to the Verizon community through the Fascinate, which carried him from Eclair all the way to Ice Cream Sandwich. Having tried various ROMs, kernels and themes based on TouchWiz, he took the plunge into AOSP in May 2011 and never looked back. He now happily taps away at his Galaxy Nexus, always looking out for the latest and greatest, and helping others along the way.

First custom ROMs come to the Droid DNA

Two weeks after the Droid DNA hit Verizon stores, the first custom ROMs were made available here on Rootzwiki. Not surprisingly, both are very similar to stock, but both are debloated, deodexed and come with some basic modifications.

The first one to appear on Rootzwiki was Genome 1.0 beta posted by MyComputerDoctor. This ROM comes in "Senseless" form which, for those of you who are unfamiliar with HTC phones and ROMs, simply means that the stock HTC launcher has been replaced by a third-party launcher (in this case Apex). Beyond the basics (rooted, deodexed, bloatware removed, superuser and busybox included, etc.), this ROM includes the following notable features:
  • custom boot animation
  • fully functional Google Now
  • constant WiFi notification from stock has been removed
  • NFC status bar icon has been removed
  • transparent status bar
Known issues include the following:
  • 3G / 4G Notification Icon does not show Data Being Sent or Received (but Data works 100%)
  • During the Initial Phone Setup, OS Reboots after Signing into Google Account (but adds account fine)
  • Boot animation runs short, but it doesn't mean that the phone is frozen or stuck in a bootloop
  • Boot takes longer on first install to rebuild the Dalvik cache

Appearing hot on the heels of Genome was UKB, posted by nitsuj17. This ROM is quite different from Genome in that it can be customized via the Aroma installer, which allows you to choose which bloatware apps you want to keep or remove (NFL Mobile is one I elected to keep). The Aroma installer also allows you to choose whether you want to keep the stock HTC launcher or go "senseless," and if you decide to keep the stock launcher you can choose to make it support landscape mode. Other Aroma options include status bar clock removal, boot animation sound removal, custom GPS locations, data wipe (you must wipe data if you want to remove boot audio) and adblock hosts file installation. In addition to the Aroma installation options, UKB includes the following notable features:
  • enabled custom recent apps actions in "display, gestures, buttons"
  • advanced power menu (reboot to recovery, hboot)
  • disabled package signature checking in services
  • Rosie on screen menu added ("Rosie" refers to the stock HTC launcher)
  • removed ics/jb 3 dot legacy menu, and changed dimensions so its not blank space in apps
  • removed persistent wifi notification in pulldown
  • removed kb icon in status bar
  • volume keys can be used to zoom in/out in camera
  • wifi scan interval set to 150 seconds from 15
The main known issue with this ROM is that you need to flash it using Clockworkmod recovery, as there are apparently some permissions problems when flashing from TWRP.

Obviously you need to have your device unlocked with your custom recovery in tow before you flash either of these ROMs. Also, neither Rootzwiki nor those who posted these ROMs are responsible if you damage your phones - you flash them at your own risk. However, if flashing UKB causes Soviet troops to parachute into the parking lot of a Colorado high school, and you are forced into the woods where you start a small guerilla unit to avenge your family, nitsuj17 said you can blame him for that (gratuitous reference to the 1984 version of Red Dawn).
