Galaxy S IV Google Edition unveiled at I/O - unlocked bootloader, non-Nexus price

May 16 2013 12:25 AM | skynet11 in Announcements

It turns out that the rumors are true - Samsung is indeed manufacturing a Google Edition of its popular Galaxy S IV, as announced earlier at Google's I/O event. The phone will run stock Android 4.2.2 (as of now, the latest version of Android, since there has not yet been any announcement of a 4.3 update). Also, the bootloader will be unlocked, but this piece of nerdvana will come at the hefty price of $649 (hefty compared to the Nexus 4, at least).

Earlier Monday we learned that Google will combine your cloud storage for Gmail, Drive and Google+ photos into 15GB shared between the apps, and later we learned that Google will bring content recommendations to your mobile site powered by its popular social network platform.

CyanogenMod nightlies come to the international HTC One

May 10 2013 09:10 PM | skynet11 in Announcements

Owners of the international, carrier-unlocked version of the HTC One certainly didn't have to wait long to get their Cid on. CyanogenMod Developer codeworkx has already brought official nightly support to the device, which has only been in the market for about two weeks. Of course, this means all the hardware features are working - RIL (Radio Interface Layer, which gives you mobile data), Bluetooth, WiFi, audio and camera, just to name a few.

Gmail will soon let you add times and dates as events in Google Calendar

May 03 2013 06:00 PM | androiduser2008 in Announcements

Given Google's reputation for innovation, its annual I/O conference should have some major new secrets that will be unveiled during the event. Not all innovations are being kept under wraps until I/O, however. For example, the Gmail team recently announced a new feature on its blog: users can now add event information within an email message to Google Calendar without having to leave the app.

Snapdragon 600-based Galaxy S IV models already have root

Apr 27 2013 01:15 AM | skynet11 in Announcements

As is often the case with Samsung devices, those based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 have a root tool available prior to release (except for AT&T customers, who may already have their devices). Dan Rosenberg, the @djrbliss who unlocked Motorola's Snapdragon S4-based RAZR series and Atrix HD, has added to his notoriety by rooting the U.S. versions (and various other versions around the world powered by the Snapdragon 600) of the Galaxy S IV.

Google Drive gets more social

Apr 25 2013 08:25 PM | skynet11 in Announcements

Google announced some interesting features that will be added to its Google Drive service Thursday, making it more amenable to collaboration and, dare I say, even social interaction. Two features in particular seem to stand out: when you collaborate on a shared document, you can see the avatars of the people you're viewing the document with (instead of just the names), and you can start a group chat with a single click.

AOKP reaches a milestone, releases a milestone

Apr 16 2013 09:10 PM | skynet11 in Announcements

AOKP, the second-most popular AOSP-based ROM after CyanogenMod, has released its first Android 4.2-based milestone, while also achieving an important milestone: one million downloads. Personally, I've used AOKP since at least Ice Cream Sandwich build 17 back in January 2012 on my Galaxy Nexus (I now use AOKP primarily on my Nexus 7), so I remember its small beginnings. The growth has come as a surprise not only to me, but also to the team members I've talked to, including team leader Roman Birg.

Meet Gaius - the new face of AOKP

Apr 02 2013 12:05 AM | skynet11 in Announcements

After much internal debate, it has been decided that the pink unicorn has outlived its days and the time has come to appoint a new mascot for the popular aftermarket ROM. Taking over as the AOKP mascot is Gaius, lead developer Roman Birg's cat. Flaunting more of a "I see what you did there" look than an "I'm about to gore my horn through your guts" look, Gaius was deemed a more appropriate mascot for users who were uncomfortable with the iconic pink unicorn.

Google Shopping is set to test same-day delivery - in San Francisco

Mar 28 2013 07:05 PM | Eli in Announcements

If you shop regularly with Amazon, then you might have signed up as an Amazon Prime member. With Amazon Prime, you get two-day delivery, no minimum order size, unlimited instant streaming of thousands of movies and TV shows, and a free Kindle book a month to borrow, which makes it arguably worth the $79 annual price. With thousands and thousands of different products you can order, you could theoretically cut your physical shopping down to almost zero. Google hopes to one-up Amazon by delivering the goods on the same day you order them.

Samsung Galaxy S IV makes its way to T-Mobile May 1st for $99 upfront

Mar 26 2013 07:55 PM | Eli in Announcements

T-Mobile has officially announced its launch date for Samsung's new Galaxy S IV, committing to having the phone available by May 1st for $99 down, making it the first U.S. carrier to announce a release date. The announcement comes with one caveat though: the S IV will apparently be carrier locked until it's fully paid off, no doubt due to the elimination of its service contracts.

Will Samsung rule the Galaxy again?

Mar 15 2013 02:00 AM | skynet11 in Announcements

Well, the big Unpacked event has come and gone, and now we're left to assimilate the flood of information unleashed at Radio City Music Hall. No more rumors, no more leaks, just facts. Samsung announced its 2013 flagship superphone in the Galaxy S IV to much fanfare and contrived acting by subpar performers (except the boy from the Unpacked teasers, Jeremy). What does the new device bring, and will it dominate the competition like its predecessor?

Huge shakeup at Google: Android exec Andy Rubin steps down, ChromeOS exec steps in

Mar 13 2013 05:40 PM | skynet11 in Announcements

Google CEO Larry Page just announced today that Andy Rubin, one of the founders of the Android operating system, will be stepping down from his post atop the juggernaut OS and turning the reins over to ChromeOS and Apps executive Sundar Pichai. According to Page's announcement, Rubin will continue to work at Google in a presently undefined capacity, but this could spell major changes to come for Android, possibly even a merger with ChromeOS.

HTC One Developer Edition coming with unlocked bootloader and SIM slot

Mar 13 2013 05:15 PM | skynet11 in Announcements

HTC One fans who value their independence from U.S. carriers and their bootloader and SIM locking will soon be able to get their fix with the HTC One Developer edition, announced yesterday by HTC, for the reasonable price of $649. While it's currently unclear which carriers will prevent the regular HTC One from being unlocked at HTCDev.com, users who buy the Developer Edition won't have to concern themselves with that.

PSA: Gaping security hole found in stock Android browser

Mar 06 2013 10:55 PM | skynet11 in Announcements

If you use the stock Android browser, you might want to make a switch unless you like potentially sharing your password with the world. The vulnerability was discovered by RootzWiki developer JBirdVegas - the stock browser, like other apps before it in Android's sordid security history, stores your saved website passwords as plain text. This means rooted users are especially vulnerable to this security hole.

Coming to America: the Sony Xperia ZL ($760 unlocked?)

As many of you know, Sony has finally released a drool-worthy product that competes with the world's top flagship phones in the CES 2013 darling Xperia Z. Its lesser-known sibling Xperia ZL promises to bring a taste of the "Xperience" to consumers in the United States, though carrier unlocked and (allegedly) at a hefty full-retail price of $759.99.

One more time for HTC

Feb 19 2013 06:25 PM | skynet11 in Announcements

HTC took one more stab at reviving its sagging smartphone business today, officially unveiling the HTC One phone. I'll give you the gist of it here: it's a slight upgrade over the DNA, only for all carriers not named Verizon. If you're on one of these other carriers and don't mind the new Sense 5 interface, this phone should be very competitive with the Galaxy S IV and the Xperia Z.

Take a Memo: ZTE announces the world's first (UPDATE: NOT) Snapdragon 800 phone (UPDATE: ZTE posted misleading specs)

Feb 25 2013 09:05 PM | skynet11 in Announcements

In the ever-increasing world of smartphone screen size, ZTE has lodged itself just under the 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate with a new iteration of the Grand Memo, the world's first announced Snapdragon 800 phone. The 1280x720 display is rather pedestrian in a brave new world of 1080p smartphones and tablets, but the real news is the debut of Qualcomm's newest and greatest processor to date: the Snapdragon 800 just days after the first Snapdragon 600 phones were announced that ZTE posted a misleading press release about the phone containing a Snapdragon 800 processor.

Samsung releases 4.1 Jelly Bean kernel source for original Galaxy Note GT-N7000

Feb 25 2013 11:55 PM | skynet11 in Announcements

Kernel developers working on the international version of the original Galaxy Note should have a field day today, as Samsung has released its Android 4.1 Jelly Bean kernel source earlier this afternoon. Now that source is released developers can make more Android 4.1 custom kernels for TouchWiz-based ROMs, which should mean more kernel options for those of you who have the international Galaxy Note and haven't flashed an AOSP-based ROM on it yet.
